Zanies Comedy Club
by TravellerMel
Came here tonight (6/30/09) for the Owen Benjamin Comedy Tour. The venue is "off the beaten path" in that it is not downtown, but rather out by the fairgrounds and Greer Stadium, but distance-wise only about 2 miles from downtown. Anyway, the venue is older, but nice by comedy-club standards. It was PACKED tonight, and the show was really good. By walking in the door, you agree to a 2 beverage/food item minimum - my cheese n chicken basket and LI Iced Tea set me back $20 - again, standard comedy club fare and prices. Overall, it was fun, and I will be back next month to see Henry Cho!
The Exit/In
by TravellerMel about The Exit/In
This is a cool place to come hear live music - rock, punk, country - the Exit/In has hosted the unknown, the up-and-coming, the current, and the has-been. Basically, a huge room with a stage at the front, a bar to the side, and a balcony in the back - this venue has been around in various incarnations since 1971. There are a half-dozen tables on the balcony, but mostly SRO, so wear your comfy shoes - it's gonna be a long night!
Check out the packed monthy calendar - there will be something to suit your musical taste! Shirt and shoes required...

Sophisticated (Yuppie) Gourmet Mexican
by TravellerMel about Cantina Laredo
Our Boss' choice for his birthday dinner, partly because he wanted for us to know where "The Gulch" is. The restaurant is very elegant - does not feel like a Mexican restaurant. Quiet for lunch, but has a very sophisticated ambiance. Prices are slightly more than a "real" Mexican restaurant, but they obviously use high quality ingredients, and it shows. We had a lovely lunch there. I had the Tortas de Carnitas, which came on mini buns with sliced tomato and avacado, and sweet potato fries. It didn't look like much on the platter, but were very filling (I could only eat 2 of the 3 on my plate). I also had the frozen Mango Margarita, which was very strong, and very good.
My companion had the Enchilada de Mole, which she described as spicy, and she liked it. She also had a frozen Pomegranite Margarita, which was tart but tasty.
Boss had Chicken Flautas, which he seemed to enjoy very much.
Ryman Auditorium - Original 'Grand Ole Opry'
by Bwana_Brown
Built in 1892 by Capt. Thomas Ryman as an evangelical Tabernacle for the citizens of Nashville, the Ryman Auditorium gained its place in the Hall of Fame when it was recognized in 1943 as the home of the Grand Ole Opry - showcase of country music USA! However, fame can be fleeting, and in 1974 the Opry was moved to its new and larger home at Opryland, out of town next to the airport. For twenty years, until 1994, the Ryman sat vacant until it was refurbished and restored to its present glory. Today, it is a prime entertainment venue for visiting performers of all types - next up was Steve Winwood!
