Things to do With Kids in Nashville

by yellowlab

My husband and I will be travelling to Nashville for a week's vacation soon with our 9 year old son. I have been reading the travel books on Nashville and they list The Cumberland Science Musuem and The Zoo as "must sees" for kids. What else is there? We were thinking of having dinner at the 101st Airborne restaurant, which they say is all WW2 memorabilia inside. Is it a good place?
Also, I think I read about a "sports" museum in Nashville. My son loves baseball, and I read, too, about the local Nashville "Sounders" baseball team. Is it hard to get tix to a game? What about the "carousel" that has carved heads of Elvis and other famous Tennessee people?

Sorry I have so many questions; just a little overwhelmed!

TIA.

Yellowlab.

The science museum and the zoo would definitely be good bets. There are also a LOT of parks if you would like to go and play frisbee or throw a baseball.
It's really easy and cheap to get tickets to a "sounds" game. You can go and buy them at the ticket counter when you arrive, no problem.
I'm sorry, but I've never been to the 101st restaurant or this "carousel". Good luck!

There are a lot of things to do in Nashville. As suggested, the Science Museum, the zoo, and the parks are great places to take the kids. I would also suggest Opry Land and the Opry Mills Mall for the kids. There's an IMAX theater, a Rainforest Cafe, an Aquarium restaurant, mini golf, glow bowling, and an arcade in the mall. There is Lazer Tag downtown on 2nd street. Wave Country on Briley Parkway is an inexpensive water park. I would also see what kind of festival is going on in town when you come. In the summer months, there is some kind of festival most weekends. There is a free movie in Cenntenial Park Wed nights. If you like the outdoors, Percy Priest is a nice lake northeast of town, and there are also some nice trails in the area (around Percy Priest, Natchez Trace, Radner Lake, Narrows of Harpeth, etc). I have not heard of the Carousel or 101st Airborne restaurant.

The Carousel that I am familiar with somewhat is the one in Coolidge Park. Everyone seems to enjoy it and Coolidge Park, itself, is a good place to be - especially if there is some kind of celebration going on.

hi --

i noticed that one answer to your Q recommended opryland. this used to be a big amusement park but is no longer there (it was closed several yrs ago, on acct of money, i think). this is a shame, b/c i went there a couple of times and enjoyed it, even tho i am not a big fan of amusement parks.

Travel Tips for Nashville

Zanies Comedy Club

by TravellerMel

Came here tonight (6/30/09) for the Owen Benjamin Comedy Tour. The venue is "off the beaten path" in that it is not downtown, but rather out by the fairgrounds and Greer Stadium, but distance-wise only about 2 miles from downtown. Anyway, the venue is older, but nice by comedy-club standards. It was PACKED tonight, and the show was really good. By walking in the door, you agree to a 2 beverage/food item minimum - my cheese n chicken basket and LI Iced Tea set me back $20 - again, standard comedy club fare and prices. Overall, it was fun, and I will be back next month to see Henry Cho!

The Exit/In

by TravellerMel about The Exit/In

This is a cool place to come hear live music - rock, punk, country - the Exit/In has hosted the unknown, the up-and-coming, the current, and the has-been. Basically, a huge room with a stage at the front, a bar to the side, and a balcony in the back - this venue has been around in various incarnations since 1971. There are a half-dozen tables on the balcony, but mostly SRO, so wear your comfy shoes - it's gonna be a long night!

Check out the packed monthy calendar - there will be something to suit your musical taste! Shirt and shoes required...

Sophisticated (Yuppie) Gourmet Mexican

by TravellerMel about Cantina Laredo

Our Boss' choice for his birthday dinner, partly because he wanted for us to know where "The Gulch" is. The restaurant is very elegant - does not feel like a Mexican restaurant. Quiet for lunch, but has a very sophisticated ambiance. Prices are slightly more than a "real" Mexican restaurant, but they obviously use high quality ingredients, and it shows. We had a lovely lunch there. I had the Tortas de Carnitas, which came on mini buns with sliced tomato and avacado, and sweet potato fries. It didn't look like much on the platter, but were very filling (I could only eat 2 of the 3 on my plate). I also had the frozen Mango Margarita, which was very strong, and very good.

My companion had the Enchilada de Mole, which she described as spicy, and she liked it. She also had a frozen Pomegranite Margarita, which was tart but tasty.

Boss had Chicken Flautas, which he seemed to enjoy very much.

Ryman Auditorium - Original 'Grand Ole Opry'

by Bwana_Brown

Built in 1892 by Capt. Thomas Ryman as an evangelical Tabernacle for the citizens of Nashville, the Ryman Auditorium gained its place in the Hall of Fame when it was recognized in 1943 as the home of the Grand Ole Opry - showcase of country music USA! However, fame can be fleeting, and in 1974 the Opry was moved to its new and larger home at Opryland, out of town next to the airport. For twenty years, until 1994, the Ryman sat vacant until it was refurbished and restored to its present glory. Today, it is a prime entertainment venue for visiting performers of all types - next up was Steve Winwood!
