Head up north of Amarillo to a town called Fritch... (check your maps boys and girls). Of course while you're there you can drive around Lake Meredith and look for the regionally famous herd of buffalo along the way, but if you want to see an archeological site dating back to the earliest days of man, check out the Alibates Flint Quarries National Monument.
This is a site where flint outcroppings were '...utilized for the manufacture of chipped-stone tools from the time that man first inhabited the Southern High Plains, beginning with the Clovis cultures of about 10,000 years ago...' (from the Handbook of Texas Online.)
It's WAY off the beaten path but certainly worth the detour time.

If you're driving I-40 or Route 66 through Texas, take a few minutes to check out Cadillac Ranch just west of Amarillo. Basically it's 10 Cadillacs from 1949 to 1963 shoved into the middle of a field - you might even say those cars were run into the ground. Okay, that was a bad pun. It's definitely worth a stop and a few pictures - a good break on a long drive.:-)
How to get there: Well there weren't any signs when I visited in 2001. It is located between exits 64 and 62 on the south side of the highway. Get off at whatever exit you can and get onto the frontage road that parallels the highway (south side). You will be able to see it from the frontage road. If you get lost, just do what I did...swallow your pride and ask for directions. Some salty Texan will roll his/her eyes as they look at you and recite those directions for the upteenth time that day.
