back in the 60`ths there was a hamburger place a few miles from downtown that sold a burger called a ranch burger. the burger had a ground beef patty, a piece of ham same size as the ground meat ,piece of balonee same size as the ground meat, and several strips of bacon,...any place sell a burger like this now.

Yow! Sounds like a "schlachterplatte" on a bun (a schlachterplatte is a 'slaughter plate', which is a common German restaurant term used to describe a plate that has a number of different meats, like pork, wurst(s), beef, etc.)

It's been a while since I've been to Athens, but here in Dallas, I can't think of anyone doing this...

Travel Tips for Athens

Home of the Hamburger

by keeweechic

There have been many stories on who invented the Hamburger but it seems that Athens lays claim to the first ground beef being put between slices of bread, garnished with ground mustard, mixed with mayonnaise, a big slice of Bermuda onion and sliced cucumber pickles. After a reasonable amount of research and some substantial evidence including a photo, it seems the person who first came up with the Hamburger Sandwich was Fletcher Davis who sold sandwiches from a booth on the midway at the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis and was the one who introduced the newest sandwich innovation to people from all over the world. It seems that the ‘hamburger’ had been sold at Athen’s lunch counters in the late 1880’s. The residents were so impressed they raised money to send ‘Old Dave’ (as he was known) to the Worlds Fair in St Louis.

Malakoff began firstly as Caney Creek then Mitcham Chapel. The name was changed in 1854 when the town applied for a Post Office. The name was chosen after a Russian town that played some role in the Crimean War. Coal was discovered in 1912 and mining became the dominant industry in the County during the 1920/30s. There has been a Miner's Reunion held every five years in Malakoff since the mines closed in 1945. There is the Walker's Malakoff Antique Mall (in 202 Terry Street) set in what was originally the town's General Store. The Malakoff's Cornbread Festival is held every year. Interesting finds in the area was of the Malakoff Man.

Location: 8 Miles West of Athens.

First Factory in Athens,

These historical markers sit along Hwy19 (Palestine St) as you are coming into Athens. It marks the site of the first factory in Athens which was established 1882 by local planter H. M. Morrison, to make building brick. Their original machinery consisted of the press which was hand operated and a mule operated swivel than ran the plunger. The original owner died in 1899 and the company went to the other partner, C.H. Coleman.

The business was bought in 1940 by Harbison-Walker refractories who continued making the Coleman bricks until its closing in 1968. The machines shown with the markers are on permanent loan to the city of Athens from the company.
