Hair Emergency

by lilhill75

Hi, I've been an Austinite for about 8 months. I'm orginally from Chicago. I would like to know if anyone can suggest a good hair straightening stylist in this area. I have THICK CURLY HAIR and very cautious on who does their performance on it. Thanxs

RE: Hair Emergency

Hello,

I have a friend that does a great job with curly hair. His hair is very curly and he has actually developed his own prodict line as well.

I believe his rates are pricey but he has worked with Laura Bush and Sandra Bullock!

Hope this helps.

I know a good barber near downtown Austin, just east of I-35 near Manor Rd. He specializes in "thick curly hair".

Look for Mr. G's Hair Salon. Here's the info:

Travel Tips for Austin

Historic Capitol Cisterns

by Stephen-KarenConn

Beside the Texas Capitol building are the remains of two underground reservoirs built to store rainwater for use in the Capitol. By 1889 an artesian well was supplying plenty of water, but it was heavily mineralized, so the rainwater stored in the Capitol Cisterns continuted to be used for fresh water until a municipal water system was built.

Rainwater was collected from the Capitol's roof through a series of concealed gutters, downspouts and pipes. A coal fired steam pump in the basement sent water throughout the building for drinking, restrooms and fire protection. Another interesting use of the cistern water was that it filled a large iron storage tank in the attic to provide power for the original hydraulic elevator. The top hatch of the cistern, seen in this photo, provided access for checking the water level and for maintainence.

Town Lake Hike and Bike Trail

by klasher

A social hub for runners, walkers, bikers and dogs-Town Lake provides an excellent opportunity for fitness, fresh air and people watching. The loop is 10 miles long, with options to create a shorter trek. Austin has over 50 miles of trails-this is just one option.

McKinney Falls State Park -...

by Sunshine64

McKinney Falls State Park - There are actually 2 waterfalls at McKinner Falls State Park. I found it on the Austin.citysearch web site, and, based on the reviews, I have to believe that this amount of water isn't always flowing. I was here in January, and, as you can see, there was plenty of water. This is the upper falls.

Shop Local

by butterfly_girl about Waterloo Records

This is a great CD, Record and Video store with a local flair. The staff can help you find what you need and it's a hip spot to wander the aisles, listen to music and get the flavor of Austin. Watch for in-store performances and make sure to go to Waterloo during the South by Southwest Music conference...there are free concerts the whole week long. CD, Records, Videos and more. $10-$25

A night full of follies!

by ATXtraveler about Esther's Follies

If you are looking for a unique way to spend the night in Austin's famed 6th St., I would highly recommend Esther's Follies.... part Vaudeville, magic-show, and improv.. this show has been running for years, and just keeps getting better!

Shows are at 8 and 10 on weekends, and 8 on Thursdays... but you will have to get your tickets early, as sell outs are very frequent! Make sure you bring $20 or $23 dollars each... with that money, you can wear whatever you want!
