Texas is FRIENDLY!
by american_tourister
I lived in SoCal for 15 years and my wife is from Tarzana. We moved to Round Rock (just N of Austin) 5 years ago. She flat out loves living here. She has made friends, has a job she loves and other than the deep summer, loves the weather. Schools are better here, housing is much more affordable and NO STATE INCOME TAX. There are a lot of things we miss about California but we don't miss the crowding, crime, cost or the Me!, Me!, Me! attitude. Texans say "Ya'll" and "Fixin to" but don't judge a culture by the way they speak, judge it by the way they act. You will find Texans to be polite, friendlier, more hospitable, helpful and curious about you than anyone on the Left Coast. Just hanging out in the park on a spring day watching my son play on the playground equipment. My dog was sitting beside me and it was just such a peacefull moment.
Always tip your hat to a lady
by carlrea
What i learnt in Texas is that cowboys are naturally very polite and towards the opposite sex very gentlemanly, like opening doors etc.
what i noticed is if you exchange pleasantries
with a female, cowboys always tip there hat along with a pleasant 'Howdy' or 'Howdy ma'am'
very old fashioned but to me very cool
just how it should be.
Unbelievable Food at Whole Foods
by hope6481
Yes, go here to eat. The food made fresh by chefs is undoubtably the best food I have ever put in my mouth. I have friends and a husband that agree this statement as well. Whatever you choose, it is so goooooooood. There is a microwave upstairs and an eating area. Or get it to go and take it home or for a picnic.
Mopac Expressway (Loop 1)

This is my 2nd favorite highway to travel in Austin. Most of the time it's only worth it at night and almost anytime on the weekends. However, it's a very scenic route. You can get a good look of Downtown Austin, Camp Mabry, and the beautiful Hill Country in NW/SW Austin.
Halloween on 6th
by yelli about 6th Street
What fun this is, parading around the street with your craziest costume and watching others with even crazier ones. Tons of people turned out for Halloween '04, even though the night ended with a downpour. There were so many people, if you love people-watching this is the place to be. The street is closed off to accomodate the people, who circle in a counter-clockwise motion in the middle. The bars and little restaurants are open, because of course you'll be hungry after all that craziness!
Also! If someone tries to give you a rose, don't take it! It's a rip off, and you (if you are a man with a woman) might end up getting charged $9 for it. The most creative thing you can think of - ALMOST no holds barred ;)
