Looking into s possible relocation
by Escorpion22
Hello friends,
I am a new member and since I have read so many useful postings, I figured some of you can probably help me in making the right decision regarding my concerns. I reside in Orlando Florida and I am looking into a possible relocation opportunity to Austin in the near future. My questions are the following: How are the the employment opportunities? How about tornadoes? Is the weather hotter than Florida? Can I find a home to purchase with low property taxes? Is the nightlife compatible to Orlando's? I will probably visit Austin sometime in the summer but I wanted to have some sort of information prior to my visit.
thanks in advance for your replies.
Miguel

Night life?
Austin is the live music capital of the world!!!! There is no second.
And the musicians that got chased out of new Orleans by Huricane Katrina are headed there.
Austin has it all. A college town, a lake and at the start of the Hill Country. Cooler than most of Texas with less humidity.
And if that's not enough. They have bats. Millions of them! Drink in hand, watching the bats come out from under the bridges at sundown... What can I say?
Some of the companies from Silicon Valley headed there. Economy flucuates and the price of housing does accordingly. I don't know what it is doing this week.

- Jobs: Austin has a pretty strong IT sector, and there's lots of gov't work. If you have experience, you should have no problem finding a job.
- Tornadoes: Rare in this area. When they do come, they're usually out in the rural areas.
- Weather: The temp may get higher than in FL, but the humidity is lower. However, it also gets much colder than FL, often snowing in the winter.
- Taxes: Don't know about FL, but TX has no state income tax, so relies heavily on its property taxes. Houses are still pretty reasonable in the Austin suburbs though.
- Nighlife: Don't know about Orlando, but Austin has one of the best nightlifes in the country. It's the live music capital and has lots of great bars. It is a college town, but you can avoid that crowd very easily.
When you come, stay in the city, but make sure you drive out to where you'd probably live (i.e. - suburbs) to get an idea of the layout. Austin tends to have some vicious commutes and notoriously bad traffic on its main freeway (I-35).
Travel Tips for Austin

by bruingirl
Wander around 6th Street, with all the other party-goers on Saturday night. It's a sight that is somewhat comparable to Mardi Gras in New Orleans. Young and beautiful 20-somethings walking around the 4 blocks (barricaded against traffic) known as 6th Street....it's just one bar after another. There are so many different types of clubs and bars, each with a unique theme. So, take a cab to 6th Street, and start working your way through all the bars! :) The fondest memory is at Schlitterbahn. They have this HUGE hot tub that has been named the 'celebrity hot tub' for some reason. After a day of drinking on the river, it was nice to just relax in this huge, warm pool of water at midnight.
Look Casual and Stay Wet
by lisa_lise
When packing for Austin, think casual. Less is more, faded is funky, flip-flops mandatory. If you've seen the inside of Old Navy or American Eagle, you've seen Austin daywear. A bottle of water is great for exploring the streets.
Krause Springs
by klasher
One of the best swimming holes in Central Texas. Most locals don't even know about this place! Water temperature is 70 degrees year round. There are 2 springs, both prismatic and beautiful! To get to the main pool is a little treachorous down very steep and wobbly stairs. Sunbathing and relaxing is done on the many large boulders surrounding the spring. This is private property and the owners charge a small fee for day use and camping.
To get there go West on 71. When you arrive in Spicewood, look for the Exxon station. Take a right at the station (Co rd 404) Krause Springs is on the right hand side-look for the sign.
If you go on a weekeday-chances are you will have the place to yourself!
Austin Music
by tee0206 about Waterloo Records
If you'd like to shop for music, you have to stop by Waterloo Records on 6th and Lamar. You'll find your favorite indie and local musicians' CDs here. You'll find CDs by plenty of up-and-coming musicians who you've never heard of next to all the classics. There's also an impressive collection of global music and used music. If you're a music fan or are simply looking for the CD of a big, local musician who you recently saw in concert, be sure to stop by Waterloo for the CD.
Whisky Bar... The place is...
by clark_landon
Whisky Bar... The place is off the charts. It's not as young as the 6th street crowd and not as old and pricey as the 4th street crowd. I've been a regular since it opened and there have been some stories to be told. If you go make sure and ask for a waitress named Brady, she keeps the drinks flowing very well and is alot of fun.
The people are very laid back. It's always funny during summer because you will most likely see some of the same people if you were out on either lake during the day. If not you can definitely tell who has been on the lake. For those interested in music, this place has great tunes but not much dancing. As for myself I either wear khakis or jeans with any type of shirt. I have seen people in bathing suits or flip flops. I would suggest going in somewhat decent attire especially if interested in meeting others.
