Looking for retirement spot

by totj212

I am currently 43 years old, single and planning on retiring in the next 3 years. I am looking to relocate in or around the Austin area. Can any-
one recommend a nice section of the city that's safe, has public utilities and where home prices are around $250k to $350K?

Lago Vista on the North side of the lake is nice.

You're too young for Sun City, and you'd probably want to stay around younger people anyway since you're in no way old.
Yeah, anything near the lake is nice, and you should be able to find something pretty decent in your price range.
Maybe also look into Lakeway, which is also very nice.

There is plenty of stuff in the city, but you may be relegated to a much smaller house in the nice neighborhoods. Have you thought about a condo or loft? You'd get way more bang for the buck.

Travel Tips for Austin

Volunteer Firemen Monument

by Stephen-KarenConn

The Volunteer Firemen Monument on the Texas State Capitol grounds is in honor of volunteer firemen in the state who have lost their lives in the line of duty. The monument consists of an engraved ganite pedestal topped by a bronze statue of a fireman holding a baby. The monument was erected by the State Firemen's Association of Texas in 1896.

Listed on the base of the monument are then names of several firemen, going back to 1877, along with the dates and the name of the fire in which they lost their lives. These inscriptions are incomplete and contain a few errors, however they remain because of the monument's historical value. Names may still be added at the request of local fire departments.

If you don't like the weather wait 5 minutes

- bring luggage that you can wheel around with you, its just easier that way.
-bring a messenger bag or a large tote for the day so you can lug everything around including a very large bottle of water. -bring comfortable walking shoes if you plan on going downtown.
-there are a lot of places to go hiking and being outdoors so bring hiking boots if you plan on hiking or being outdoors
-the summers are extremely hot, so bring light colored clothing in materials such as cotton or linen
-the winters can be cold and are usually wet. so bring an umbrella and a warm coat and dry shoes.

Neighborhood beer joint

Ginny's Little Longhorn Bar on Burnet Road is a good place to cool off and enjoy some beer. They open early everyday and on Sunday Dale Watson provides live music. This is place has been here for years and is a great place to get a real idea of Austin

Cool Stuff from Around the World

by butterfly_girl about Tesoros Trading Company

This a cool, eclectic store in downtown Austin that has products from around the world. They specialize in Folk art, jewelry, textiles, clothing and lots of interesting trinkets, such as Buddha and Hindu items. This is a great place to come and wander around. Good place to get items from Mexico, Nepal and South America.

This store is also a special place for me, because they are carrying one of my own postcards that I made of "Sadhus of Nepal".

Hip-Hop Haven

by Jmill42 about Red Fez

A no cover bar on the weekends, hip-hop music (mainly) and a very cool decor all add up to a very cool club. Perfect for getting a few drinks with your friends, or for trying to make new ones with your new moves on the dance floor. Many restaurant style booths line the outer edges and many couches equal polenty of sitting room for those who prefer to stay on the sidelines. Great drinks (i.e. big bang for the buck) round out the positives on this place. Upscale and trendy, but still casual enough to be in jeans without feeling out of place.
