Hostel on the River
If you are looking for a great, inexpensive place to stay in a central location, the Austin Youth Hostel is a perfect choice. The Hostel is right on the townlake and even offers a canoe for hostel guests. There is also a hike and bike trail right next to the hostel. The staff is very friendly and the shared rooms are clean. It is very close to the downtown area. The staff is very friendly and they will be able to provide lots of useful Austin information.
Unique Quality: The Austin Travel Circle meets here every first and third Monday of the month to discuss travel related topics at 7:00pm.

Best Lodging Locations
Although you would be tempted to stay at one of the luxury joints downtown, if you are on your own and just want to party downtown, stay at the Austin Youth Hostel. It's right by Town Lake and you can go kyaking, boating, etc (they rent on site) during the day and walk to downtown for fun nights out at about $20 a night!
Unique Quality: The great location is what's great about this place. You have the great lake view (and night skyline) right out back. The downtown area is within walking distance, although a cab or bus is also cheap from such a short walk away. Also, there are tons of fast food restaurants open to the wee hours to satisfy the late night munchies after drinking for six hours...

Great Digs for the Budget Traveler
My two nights at this Austin Hostel was a very pleasant and comfortable experience. The 39-bed hostel is also convenient, located one-half mile east of Interstate 35. Beside the hostel is plenty of free parking. I had a rental car when I was here, the hostel is only a fifteen minute city bus ride from downtown Austin and its famous live music scene on 6th Street, as well as other attractions.
The common room is very large and welcoming and there is also a well equipped kitchen. The thing I liked most was the wall of windows to the back of the common room overlooking Town Lake. The hostel sits on a dedicated hike and bike trail around this beautiful lake. Inexpensive rental bikes, canoes and kayaks are available for hostel guests. I could have enjoyed a much longer stay here if other adventures had not been calling.
