Austin with a Teenager
by Rixie
I'll be in South Austin for three days in June with a 17 year old and no car. We're excited about the trip and have lots of things we'd like to see and do during the daylight hours. However, I'm kind of stumped about where I can take her at night. I assume that because she's under 21, music clubs are out. Do you have any ideas?

It depends on where exactly in South Austin you're going to be. The South Congress area and Zilker Park are technically South Austin, but are very close to Downtown.
Austin's a difficult town without a car, especially outside of Downtown.

We'll be staying at the Wyndham Garden. I'm told that it's not too far from a Dillo line.

You should be able to get to the SOCO area which is lots of fun. You can go to Gueros Taco Bar and they usually have music on the weekends for the under 21 crowd. You can also go to Ruta Maya which is a really good option, they have music and its just a good hang out spot. HOw about a movie at the very cool Alamo Draft House...a unique movie theater that serves food with your movie. Check out these links for info. All of these places should be on the bus line

Thanks very much, Kym; those are great ideas. I'll check out the websites.
Travel Tips for Austin
The Need for Internet!
by Jmill42
For those travelling through Austin, the need to download all those photographs, or to check your email is made easy by the city of Austin. At any public library, you may access the internet for free. The limit is something like 1 hour per day. Not bad for free, right? And the computers are actually of good quality and speed!
Cultural tips??? This is...

Cultural tips??? This is Texas we are talking about, right??? Lets just say, Boots and Wranglers. Any of you wearing Levi's can just stay home. The broken spoke is a good place for country music (at least it used to be, its kinda too popular now since it was also a favorite of Pres Bush). Actually, Texans are quite friendly and can be quite funny. Austin is quite a liberal and fast growing city. Definatley worth a visit.
Roller Derby!
by Wingshot
On Sunday afternoons in the spring/summer, be sure to check out the rollerderby at the old Austin airport. Gates open at 6:00, there are two live bands, cheap alcohol, and plenty of hard-core roller derby girls going at it. A great place to wind out the weekend!
Tickets are $10.00.
Note: This place offers some of Austin's finest people-watching. I saw more tattoos & piercings in one night here than I saw all last year.
The Pedernales Falls
by Djinn76
No need to make too much effort to see what makes the main attraction of this park, simply drive to the most west part of the park and walk a couple hundreds meters to see the beautiful falls of the Pedernales River flowing over tilted stair steps of layered limestone.
It was really nice but I found quite deceiving to simply drive until there, it would have been much better to discover the falls following a couple of miles hikes!
Check out some live music
by butterfly_girl about All over town
Austin is filled with local musicians. While you are in Austin, make sure to go check out some live music. There is music every night of the week, so you won't have a problem finding something to do. Check out the music listing in the Austin Chronicle or just head over to 6th street any night of the week and there will be bands and solo acts playing. Some of the great local musicians to check out are Kacy Crowley, Bob Schneider, Billy Harvey, Dewato, John Dee Graham and Todd Rusch. Good clubs to check out are Saxon Pub, Continental Club, Alligator Grill, Cactus Cafe and Ruta Maya.
