Where are you coming from, and how long are you planning for your "day" to be?

Re: Day Trip to Austin

I am driving in from San Antonio..which is not far. Current plan is to ther early morning and leave late evening...

Any suggestions?

I would check the Austin Chronicle's Web site, www.austinchronicle.com, to see if anything special is going on the day you're going to be there. Zilker Park (where Barton Springs is located) is lovely, but I'm not really an outdoorsy type so I don't really know where the hiking trails and all that are. When I'm not deployed, I live about an hour north in Killeen, so when I'm in Austin during the day it's usually to go to either one of the malls, South Congress or the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema (which I believe they have a property in San An, so you might not want to spend your time in Austin doing that).

Have fun!

Travel Tips for Austin

Keep Austin Weird

by GenuinelyCurious

I like this little enclave of the offbeat and fun in a place that's known for its conservatism.

Spent about 36 hours in Austin checking out the music scene and the areas in/around the main town.... seems nice and definitely worth a visit.

Be Friendly - Don't dis the Texans

by amberz

If you're on a country road, and someone waves at you, chances are, you don't know them. They're just being friendly. Downtown driving is another story....

Texans have fierce pride in Texas and are proud of being Texans...sometimes so much so, it can be annoying (some people). So, don't bad mouth Texas, or you'll most likely *** somebody off.

Wildlife Is Where You Find It

by Stephen-KarenConn

I was surprised to see this Yellow Crowned Night Heron apparently taking a snooze on the branch of a tree hanging over Barton Springs Creek along a busy walking trail in Austin's Zilker Park. The Yellow Crowned Night Heron is normally a secretive bird which prefers wooded swamps, fresh and saltwater marshes and thickets. It's range is from New England in summer to Florida and the Gulf Coast to the lower Mississippi River Valley in winter. Is this one lost - or is the bird extending it's range westward?

The only others of this species I have see have been deep in the river bottom swamps of Georgia and South Carolina.

Statues

by kimberbakos

All over Austin there are tons of neat statues. There are many on the capital grounds, as well as in other locations. We saw a few on the UT campus, too. The workmanship is awesome. If you like art and appreciate artistry, take time to look at the Austin statuary.
