Dabb's Hotel (about 2 hours from Austin): Cowboy Coffee

This hotel is not right in Austin, it is in the Hill country of Austin about 2 hours drive. This bed and breakfast has a lot of character to it. It is run by a great man that makes the best breakfast and "cowboy coffee" as he calls it. This cowboy coffee is boiled on the stove and served up in a ladle for you. He also cooks up potatoes and biscuits in the morning. When we arrived he had fresh baked cookies. The hotel is on the Llano river and has a lot of charm. We came for Thanksgiving and a bunch of musicians were there jamming on the patio and sharing in a feast.

The rooms are pretty simple. This is not a fancy hotel. But, it is a very cool hill country experience. If you want luxury, don't come here, but, if you want a fun, Texas experience, this is a great one. Check out their website for reviews and more info.

6th Street Hostel: 6th Street Hostel

$18 - $40

It's in the heart of downtown and 6th St is known for its nightlife since it's lined up and down with bars and clubs. You won't have to go very far if that's what you're looking for. Perfect for a traveler on a budget.

The Grove: Austin Home Away from Home

I was revcently introduced to a great accomodation style, VRBO (Vacation Rental by Owner). I hear it has been around for over 30 years. It is someone's home that they rent when they are not staying there. What a great find. You basically get to stay at a place that is another person's home with all the awesome amenities. And it is cheaper than hotels if you have more than 3-4 people traveling.
This place was very stylish, had pleanty of room and I loved that it was like a 3-story treehouse on the edge of an oak grove. We had 3 families with teenagers and most ended up with their own room!!!! There is a video room, wifi, wow!!
I was really surprised that it was so close to SOCO, a popular happenin' palce and the trip to downtown and the nightlife was 10 min. away. I am sold on this way to travel!!!!! You are like extended family without having to put up with the in-laws.
I'm even thinking about bringing my partners here for a "working" business retreat!!

The house was fully stocked in the kitchen, the bathrooms, it had books to read. One of the owner's was there to check you in and available to answer any questions about the area!! And the video room on the 3rd floor was awesome to kick back...also wifi!! Quite contemporary with a homey feel!

(several): It's the location

Why would I stay in a Hotel? I have a house.

There are a couple of re-furbished old/small hotels down on South Congress (just south of the river/downtown) which are rumored to be nice. The real key here is that, if you're gonna be in Austin, this is the best location to stay in order to get a real "feel" for the city. Convienient to all things you will do, too.

Sheraton: Downtown Hotel

Under rennovation in July 2007. The bed was comfortable, but the carpet, tub and furniture was still circa 1980. The staff neglected to inform us that there would be construction beginning at 8 am ON A SUNDAY!! Two thumbs down.

The pool area was nice, but there was no water in the pool. The bar was comfortable.

Wellesley Inn & Suites - Austin Northwest: Exceptionally Nice!

I would recommend this hotel as it is a rare find. The service and facilities were perfect. I would highly recommend.

The hotel is in a very nice area with a decent view of the lake. The staff was very knowledable and helpful. The rooms were clean and quite large. The continental breakfast, with Belgian Waffles were great. In close proxcimity to downtown Austin as well as the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in the heart of Northwest Austin's business district.. I would stay at their hotel again and swim in their well-kept pool.

Wellesley Inn & Suites - Austin Northwest: A decent Hotel

Along Research Boulevard (183) in the North of Austin, this is quite far from the city centre (about 10 min drive) but just in the middle of the business area. Really big room with a small kitchen. This is clean and the personnel is quite friendly. Breakfast is included in the price but there is no restaurant, this is a self-service breakfast, for example you can have a waffle but you would have to cook it yourself! Quite funny, this is the first time I see that but it’s not a bad idea…

There is also a swimming pool but nothing exceptional, so small it would be more for children playing than to really swim!
It is not super luxurious but it’s nice and everything you need is there
