New Year's Eve in Austin
by ouguy23
My friends and I have never been to Austin, so we decided to go for New Year's Eve this year. What is the best place to go to on sixth street for New Year's? We are looking for a place that plays top 40 & hip hop and where we can dress up nice for.
Thanks

I LOVE Austin, I'm particularly fond of Sixth Street, but I can't say I've ever been there for New Year's.
There was another question about New Year's Eve in Austin very recently, with many helpful answers. Most of the bars seem to be requiring reservations; the fellow who asked the last question said he had found a bar crawl type ticket for $80; a couple of my friends who worked at one of my favorite bars, Aquarium, recently opened a new one above it - Rooftop on 6th - and they're having a party, open bar until 1 a.m., champagne toast at midnight, for $75 if you reserve a spot before Christmas, and $85 after. I haven't been able to check this bar out, but the guys who opened it are cool.
Most of the bars on Sixth play a mix of top 40 and hip hop, usually with a little danceable rock thrown in.
Have a great time! And check out the answers to the other recent New Year's in Austin question.

Travel Tips for Austin
Austin Heart Hospital
by counsel14
I know this is a weird thing to write about, but after a heart attack and a stent collapse, I think it's important to know about the health resources available to those in the area.
Austin heart Hospital is located in Austin, Texas. The address is 3801 N. Lamar, Suite 300
Austin, TX 78756
(512) 206-3600
This is a fully accredited hospital that specializes in cardiac care. The hospital also has several clinics within the building and provide cardiac catheratizations, and have the following clinics on an appointment basis: Heart Failure Clinic, Coumadin Clinic, Electrophysiology Clinic, Self Referral Screenings and Diagnostic Services.
Austin Heart Hospital also has several outreach clinics in central Texas. They have 47 cardiac physicians that practice here. They use state of the art equipment and have a helicopter pad on the roof near their emergency services department.
Austin Heart has a specialized test for cardiac problems called the heart saver CT. The HeartSaver CT is a Non-Invasive Test that can Detect Heart Disease in Less Than Seven Minutes. It costs about $150.00 for this test, and most insurances will now cover it.
Honestly, if it weren't for the great doctors and nurses at Austin heart Hospital I would not be alive to tell you about them. Should you have any cardiac problems while in the Austin Area, go to this hospital. Austin Heart hospital

Not your typical Texas city
by kd_baby
Austin is *not* your typical Texas city. It's more liberal than any other major Texas city. Also, and more importantly, don't expect to find much southern "twang" here; most people just speak plain old American English.
Great place for kayaking!!
by TXWildflower
Just about 10 miles south of Austin you'll find the beautiful crystal clear river in San Marcos "Rio Vista Falls" Because it is spring fed it has a constant year round water temperature of about 76 degrees. Recently redeveloped by a kayaker enthusiast. There are now three falls and a nice grassy area for sunbathing. You can also rent tubes for a nice relaxing float down the river.
Austin Nature & Science Center
by ATXtraveler
First off, I do not want credit for this tip.. this information is directly off their website, however I have been there and would agree that their assessment is very accurate.
The Austin Nature and Science Center is a non-profit community center that provides nature exhibits and natural science education resources for individuals, Austin area teachers, and child study groups.
The center is open for public visits on Monday through Saturday, 9:00AM - 5:00PM and Sunday, noon - 5:00 PM . If you are interested in visiting the ANSC, please read the Personal Visits & Group Tours page for more information.
Nightlife
by carlrea about Red Fez
This place is bonkers and was absolutely packed out when i went there on Saturday evening - definitely not one for shy and retiring types however if 'bumping' and 'grinding' are your thing then this place is a definite tick on places to go whilst in Austin oh and full of beautiful people. Smart and casual, common sense really and no sneakers.
