Why Austin?

by Figure5

Why would someone travel to Austin over travelling somewhere else? What other towns would someone consider going to before choosing to come to Austin? I am working on a tourism project for Austin through the University of Texas and would like to know your opinions!

Austin is such a diverse city.
The people are laid back and friendly. Plus you have the beautiful hills and lots of water around. Why not?

Re: Why Austin?

by Sweetberry1

As well as all the above.. Austin is a beautiful city, has a lot to offer the visitor. It is also the greatest place to be if you enjoy good music..
Fantastic nightlife, entertainment, cultural, and historical places to explore..

Music!

The Austin music scene is one of the most vibrant in the world.

To see the hill country, or the fact that it's the state capital.

Where to go in Texas depends on what one's looking for:
Austin has a good college/party scene. The state capital is also a good attraction.
San Antonio is good for Texas history (i.e. Alamo and missions).
Houston is good for big city stuff (i.e. top-notch arts/culture, museums, restaurants) and national attractions (such as NASA). It also has a nice, recently revitalized downtown with a big city feel.
Dallas has these things too, but many find it lacking in soul and unoriginal. It also has the JFK assassination history.

There are tons of things to do in Austin. Watersports, cycling, camping, rock climbing are but a few of the outdoor activities going on here. Here are a couple of websites that pertain mostly to Austin and thing that are going on:

Travel Tips for Austin

Halloween party...

by Djinn76

During the Halloween Week End, 6th street is completely invaded by herds of masqueraded/disguised people.

Really fun indeed, people are hopping from one pub to the other one. Although the atmosphere was quite nice, there was also a bunch of policemen ready… I’ve been told that a couple of years ago, it ended up by a big riot…

This year however, the rain spoiled the pleasure, around 1-2am, violent showers started to wash the streets…

Road trip to Fredericksburg

by monicarc

If you like shopping at cute/cool/unique places, take about an hour drive to Fredericksburg, off of 290 east. I am from Houston--where you can buy/have every shop imaginable and I think Fredericksburg has the cutest stores there that sell everything---they even have some places men would find interesting, my husband thinks Fredericksburg is ok.

I don't know if people miss...

by Sunshine64

I don't know if people miss this or not. I wasn't aware of it the first couple of times I visited Austin. But.... Austin is home to the largest colony of bats in North America (at least that is what I was told). At dusk they take off (to feed) from the south side of one of the bridges over the Colorado River downtown. It's pretty amazing to see.

The Live music world capital

by GUYON about 6th Street

I was deceived by the 6th street. We foresaw to diner in a club listening live music.
We did not find a large choice and the music we heard did not attract us.
The music was mainly present in the dancing club. Few restaurants had an orchestra.

So I disagree with the title. I found more live music in the 4e district of Paris, near les Halles.
The picture was taken at the daylight because the night photographes are too dark.

Exodus

by frankcanfly about 6th Street

Had a GREAT time dancing here! Excellent dance floor, continuous music and fun people!

When the dance floor got a bit too crowded, we later moved from here to 'Speakeasy' for some Wednesday night Salsa dancing.
