Visit the tallest state...
by noahsdad
Visit the tallest state capitol (taller even than the U.S. Congress--Texans like to do things big), a sprawling pink granite structure. The gift shop (in a small building on the grounds) offers brochures that describe self-guided walking tours through the historic areas and sells fun Texas stuff plus cookbooks and a wide range of books (e.g., guides to the missions, histories of black Texans, German Texans, Italian Texans, etc.). 6th Street.
SXSW
by kd_baby
SXSW, which stands for "South by Southwest", is Austin's huge media festival and conference. The primary reason most people attend this event is for the local and/or independent films (yet to be released to the general public).
Since Austin has a huge arts and media culture, this event is the time for the local filmmakers to "show their stuff".
Lake Travis
by stappm
Lake Travis is Worth the drive over, but you'll need to rent a car if you're staying in the downtown Austin area. Great live misic and over 40 decks overlook the lake. The houses nearby almost look like castles hanging off the hillside. The weather was a bit off on the day we went, but this place appears to pump when it's hot out.
Texas Historical Commission - Weigl Iron Works
by ATXtraveler
If you are walking around the convention center area and are not hungry for some delicious Iron Works BBQ, I would still take the time to see some of the history involved in the building. It is a true immigrant story, and the iron works inside the store are really unique.
Still got the blues....
by challenger about Joe’s Generic Bar
If you’re out for a good time, love to have the odd drink or two and listen to some live music 6th Street (as well as the more mature 4th Street area) is the place to be. Every night you’ll be able to listen to your favourite music. No matter whether it is country, rock, hip hop, Latin, jazz or reggae that your heart desires: You WILL find a place that plays it.
There are so many live music bars around, it’s impossible to even try and attempt to name’em all. Just stroll around and let your ears guide you. Alternatively: Get a copy of the “Austin Chronicle” for a complete guide to what’s on.
My personal favourite is Joe’s Generic Bar. Joe is a burly, cheerful Italian with a passion for the blues. His place only holds about 100 people max, but is the only place in town where you will be able to listen to the blues at any given night of the week. Entrance is free, but please tip the bands who don’t get any other fee.
