Art, art, art - yes, my fondest memory of Austin is its artistic richness... lot's of different art galleries everywhere. My second fondest memory is this fountain at UT... nothing to write home about, I know, but it was a very refreshing sight in Texas' heat.
Get ready for the Texas Heat!
by ATXtraveler
I have always believed that less is more when travelling! Don't pack what you can't carry! Comfortable shoes are a must if you are going to walk in Zilker Park or down 6th St. for entertainment. Expect the hot weather during the day but breezes at night, so bring layers of clothing. Readily available throughout Austin, don't worry about bringing anything other than your emergency first aid kit :) Bring lots of film and/or digital memory... bluebonnets need pictures to stay alive! There are plenty of campgrounds out here, so if that is your thing... pack them! Anti-perspirant is a key here, because when it gets humid, it would be great.
Mayfield Park
by tee0206
Mayfield Park is really a nice little spot in Austin. The coolest thing about this place is that there are peacocks randomly roaming around. The park offers some simple, easy trails for some very low-key, not-too-strenuous hiking/walking/exploring. There are lots of neat plants, including plenty of cacti (after all, this IS Texas). It's a pretty spot.

Fado's Irish Pub on 4th Street; The Speakeasy Club; The Whiskey Bar on 5th; Mellagio's on 6th; Miguel's La Bodega at 4th and Colorado.
Most of the bars I like are located in the Warehouse District (4th Street and Colorado). They're more upscale than those on 6th street. Fado's is a great Irish Pub w/ Mahogony bars and seats. Great Irish music and a ton of fun! Miguel's La Bodega is the best place to go for some Salsa/Merengue dancing on a Saturday night. Austin is casual....don't feel like you ever have to dress up to go out on the town!!!! It took me a while to understand this.
