Visiting Dallas area in September

by MelanieBee

Hi

I'll be in the Fort Worth/Lewisville in early Sept for a few days for work, but have a couple of free days. I arrive on a Saturday afternoon and have Sunday free, and I think I have another free day on Friday.

I've been watching Pro Bull Riding on TV for a while and would like to go to a rodeo. I checked the Mesquite Rodeo website but the schedule only goes to the end of August. Will there still be something going on when I am in town? And is this the best place to go? How would I get there from Lewisville if I am not driving?

What else would you recommend? Some smart alec at the office suggested Southfork ranch...

Hmpf, I'm surprised to see the Mesquite Rodeo stop at the end of August, but you're right.

Well, there is still rodeo in Ft. Worth every Friday and Saturday evening in September - see http://www.cowtowncoliseum.com/news.asp

I have not been to this rodeo (I have been to Mesquite's just last year), but you can explore the website.

Note that Ft. Worth in general is a good destination (if not close to Lewisville) - see http://www.fortworth.com/01visitors/01visitors.shtml for the Ft. Worth Convention and Visitors Bureau website for all sorts of stuff to do.

About the 'how to get there', well, if you don't have a car or a friend with a car, you're not going anywhere in a hurry. The DFW area was built assuming that everyone has a car, and there's just no two ways about it, especially if you're in most suburbs. I am not sure how much public transit there even is in Lewisville; I know that is a DART (www.dart.org) park and ride station in Lewsiville, but it may not have a lot of buses to places other than downtown Dallas...

Are you sure you don't have access to a car?

P.S. you are right to be disdainful about Southfork, since it is a large house on a relatively small lot (not a ranch) north of Dallas...there's nothing there...

Travel Tips for Dallas

Reunion Tower

by goingsolo

An easily recognized landmark in the Dallas skyline, the Reunion Tower is the tallest building in the city. The tower is located at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Dallas and is 55 stories above the ground. An elevator takes you to the top where there's a rotating cocktail lounge and restaurant which provides the best view in Dallas.

Texas twisters

by elmcarra

Its true, Dallas is right in what we call "tornado alley". Make sure that if youre visiting during tornado season (April-May especially) that you are aware of where to go in case of emergency. Generally interior rooms with no windows are good, some suggest bathrooms because of the pluming (acting as protective barrier) inside the walls, or IN the bathtub with a mattress pulled over you. Interior closets are good, especially if built under a sturdy staircase. Unfortunately, the safest place would be in an underground basement, however, due to the changes in our soil year round, basements are not built in texas homes. Also, be advised that being in your car is not safe during a tornado. If outdoors, lie flat in a ditch...I know it sounds insane, but thats what they say! Let me know if it works....

American Airlines Arena

by grandmaR

My daughter pointed out the AA arena as we drove past. I'm not sure if they've been there to a Dallas Mavericks game or not. I tend to think not, because my SIL is more into the Cowboys and participatory sports. In addition to the Mavericks (basketball) the Stars (hockey) and Desparados (arena football) play here. I was more interested in the arena because of the American Airlines connection.

The exterior of American Airlines Center is made of brick, limestone and granite and inside it is 840,000 square feet.

There are four entryways into the event level:
The Zamboni entrance (North)
the Home Team entrance (East)
the Visiting Team entrance (West)
and the Elephant entrance (South) All guests visiting the American Airlines Center must pass through metal detectors when entering the facility. Large bags and backpacks are not allowed and all other bags will be inspected. Items such as firearms, knives and other weapons are prohibited.

Patrons should avoid bringing prohibited items and any unnecessary items that may activate the metal detectors. Upon entry into the facility remove all items from your pockets including cell phones, pagers, and car keys. Also, have purses and small bags open and ready for inspection. If at anytime you observe and unusual behavior by other guests, please notify your section usher so that we may investigate.

Small signs are allowed but larger signs with sticks or poles are not. Other prohibited items include food products, bottles, aerosol cans, coolers, weapons and laser pointers.

They forget to check out the surrounding areas like Plano, TX, where the Steve Miller Band is from. Mesquite is another nice area, out in the country. There are a lot of bands that play in the summer months. (Used to call them 'Texas cowpatty Parties'.

Farmers Market

by keeweechic

Just a few minutes drive from downtown Dallas or a 20 min walk. Initially in the late 1800's this was nationally known place for farmers to bring their produce to sell.

Today there is still fresh fruit, vegetables and meat as well as handcrafts, furniture, jewellery and flowers.

Market is open Sunday thru Saturday 7am to 6pm.
