Stop over in Dallas - what to do?

by Liandradp

Hi, I have a 5 hour stopover in Dallas in Aug and was wondering what I could do and see that is interesting? Was thinking of North Folk Ranch or Daley Plaza..... Enough time or not? How do I get to these places from the airport?
Thanks

It all depend on the day, time, flight routes and money. ie. more info is needed

you might be able to make a quick trip into downtown dallas to see dealey plaza and the west end, but you would probably be rushing here and there. the Trinity Railway Express connects Dallas and Ft. Worth and makes a stop at DFW airport. southfork ranch is north of dallas and too far. there are nice shops, restaurants, and a winery at the airport...not a bad place to spend 5 hours.

Travel Tips for Dallas

Reunion Tower - Observation level

by OlenaKyiv

Reunion Tower is located on Union station near Hyatt Hotel. Actually you don't need much of directions, just look up.

Some information about Tower:
- It was built in 1978
- it takes 68 seconds to get to the upper level
- 14.5 acres in the hotel and Tower
- In 1854 the area of hotel and Tower was found by French colony La Reunion
- 118 feet in diameter is the geodesic dome over Reunion Tower First of all, after hearing a lot of nice things about Tower (from brochure of course) don't have a lot of expectations about it. Yes, it is tall and you can see the city, and I think this is the only positive thing, at least on the observation level. First of all you have to pay $2 for adults and $1 for children. After the elevator brings you on the top, you get into different banquet rooms that smell just awfully. After long wandering in searching for the door, you find it and it occurs that you cannot see a lot because the view is obscured by metal net that demands you to stick both eyes between cells and only then you can observe wonderful view of the downtown. Also you have to suffer dirty glass that is between you and metal net. I took a couple of pictures but it took me a lot of effort. I think the owner of this Tower could do more, at least clean the glass.

I didn't try two restaurants on the top of the Tower, maybe the view from there is better, especially if you have a couple of drinks, however, after the drink even the worse view can look as Heaven.

Events and Food

There are stage performances, children’s activities and cultural demonstrations such as basket making. You can also try some American Indian food – a very different interpretation of the Taco or just munch on a delicious freshly cooked corn cob. You can buy food on a coupon basis ahead of time.

Airport Observation

by e2w

See the DFW Airport Observation Area. Exciting takeoffs, landings, and radio chatter abound at this marvelous must see for tourists. Admission: FREE (Best Deal around!)

From SH 183, take the 2nd road after entering the South Entrance. Continue to the Airport Admin. office, and take a left. Continue a half mile, and the observation area will be on your right.

Celestial Park....

This is a favorite of mine...it is close to the house, and my favorite part is tucked away area that most people are unaware of...This picture is the winter of 1995 or 1996?

It is a great place for picnics...reading, cloud gazing, day dreaming, organizing your thoughts, setting goals, etc. etc...

Tree's - nice live music venue in Deep Ellum

by geanster about Tree's

Tree's has been a favorite venue of mine for awhile. I guess I was more fond of it a few years ago when I was still in college, but I still don't pass up acts I want to see there.

It is a rather smokey joint with a decent sound set-up. It's one of those places that make you feel involved with the musicians. Another bonus is that I'd say about 80% of the time, you get the opportunity to meet the bands after the show. Just wait out around their bus until the crowd disperses and they'll usually come out and hobnob, chat, take photos, sign autographs, etc.

A few of the bands I've seen and met in Deep Ellum include:

Powderfinger (from Australia)
David Gray (From Wales)
Sister Hazel (US)
Kasey Chambers (from Australia)
30 Seconds to Mars (US) * Hours are normally 8:30 - 1:00 On Weekdays (unless otherwise noted). 9:00 - 2:00 Fri and Sat
* Trees is open Wed. thru Sat., but will open Sun, Mon, and Tue for special events.
* You must be at least 17 years old to enter.
* You must be 21+ to drink (NO EXCEPTIONS, it's the law).
* You must have a valid (real) Drivers License to enter.
* We reserve the right to refuse service to anyone.
* The Trees box office opens at 9:00 pm and does not sell hard tickets
* Tickets for select Trees shows are avaliable at , Good Records 214-7524663, CD World 214-826-1885, any Albertson's in Texas or by calling Star Tickets at 888-597-7827. Some other show tickets are available at most Ticketmaster outlets.
