Westend Carriage Rides
by blkk3n42
How much are the carriage rides?
Re: Westend Carriage Rides
by mccalpin
Hmmmn, I've never taken one, but here is the website of one such company with their listed prices - http://www.cinderella-coach.com/West_End_Tours.html
Ah, here's another one...pretty much the same prices for the same length trip...http://www.partyanimalscarriage.com/pricing.htm
So, maybe $65 for 30 minutes, $100 for an hour, subject to availability, and how busy they are (maybe if you walk up on a slow day, they will negotiate???)...

Travel Tips for Dallas
OLD RED--The Old Dallas Courthouse
by VeronicaG
If you are anywhere near the West End or the JFK sites, you'll notice the old Dallas Courthouse sitting proudly on 100 S. Houston Street.
The former courthouse, affectionately called OLD RED is a Romanesque Revival style building, which was erected in 1892 and is comprised of old granite and sandstone. Architects Orlopp & Kusener designed this multi-turetted building, which replaced four prior courthouses. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
After reading through OLD RED's history, I learned several reasons why courthouses and their clocks were important to the community:
"A county courthouse was looked to for standards, not only in law and civil dispute, but also in such commonplace needs as the correct time.
Farmers visiting the courthouse square to complete business would set their pocket watches to the clock and convey that accurate time back to their homestead.
Also, national time standards were't established by law until 1918."
A 3.5 million dollar + restoration of the clock tower will return the courthouse to its original look, adding 90 feet to this imposing structure. A newer, contemporary styled courthouse has been erected across the street from the Old Dallas courthouse.
Old Red's visiting hours are Mon.-Fri. 8am-4:30 pm; Sat.-Sun. appt. only. (214-745-1100)A visitor's center is located on the ground floor of the building and the savvy Internet Cafe is situated in one of its turrets.
Consider yourself at home
by Rillifane
There's a bumper sticker a lot of us have on our pick-up trucks. It reads: "I wasn't born in Texas but I got here as soon as I could."
I'm one of those folks. A transplanted New Yorker.
The history of Texas is filled with people who ran from bankruptcy, bad love affairs and the law to make a new life for themselves.
Its big and brash, filled with exuberance and excess, and utterly unashamed.
Its also welcoming and friendly.
When I first came to Texas a few years ago, I wandered into Stan's Blue Note on Greenville Avenue in Dallas. Within a few minutes someone asked "where y'all from?" I said that I had just moved to Dallas. "Hey everybody," my interogator announced, "We got us a New Texan." "Let me buy you a beer," he said.
That's what Texas is. A place that says no matter who you are or where you're from, you're one of us, no further questions asked.
Take your pick

If you love watching sports, you have the Dallas Mavericks, Dallas Stars, Texas Rangers and of course the Dallas Cowboys. NASCAR is really popular here too, with the Texas Motor Speedway nearby.
Dallas/Fort Worth have lakes for boating, fishing and many bike trails.
Irving
by btex
Irving is a city right next to Dallas. Actually, I lived in Irving for a bit. There you will find Texas Stadium (where the Cowboys play,) Las Colinas, Mandalay Canal with Venetian-style water taxis and waterfront, Movie Studios at Las Colinas, the Mustangs of Las Colinas (statues at Williams Square,) and more. My favorite hang-out in Irving was Judge Roy Bean's restaurant...I never ate there, but whenever you bought a beer during happy hour you would get a spin on a wheel to win prizes...such as another beer, a shot, food, or nothing.
