Meadows Museum--SMU
by VeronicaG
The Meadows Museum is part of Southern Methodist University's School of Art and was established in 1965. The galleries and collection of Spanish Art were a gift to the University by Algur H. Meadows, a Dallas businessman and founder of General American Oil Company of Texas.
This striking structure is designed in the neo-Palladian style. I was impressed to learn that the museum's collection of Spanish art is one of the largest outside of Spain. Some of the masterpieces are painted by Picasso, Valazquez, El Greco, Miro, Goya, Murillo and Ribera.
Renaissance altarpieces, wood sculptures, medieval art, Baroque and Impressionist pieces and sculptures by major twentieth century masters are also housed here.
FYI: Meadows Museum is located at 5900 Bishop Boulevard, three blocks west of Mockingbird Station and off North Central Expressway.
Hours are Tues.-Sat. 10am-5pm; Thurs. until 8pm; Sun. 12 noon-5pm. Closed Mondays, Easter Sunday, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Day, New Year's Day. Admission is $8 per person, but kids under 12 are free; there is no charge after 5 pm on Thursdays.
JFK Assassination 40th Anniversary
by keeweechic
This date had significant value to Dallas' this was the 40th anniversary date of John F Kennedy's assassination. Large crowds gathered in Dealy Plaza to mark the time (12.30pm) when Lee Harvey Oswald shot the President. Visitors came from near and far to lay flowers and mementos at a makeshift shrine on the grassy knoll. The flag at John F. Kennedy Memorial Plaza was flown at half staff.
The Sixth Floor Museum opened a special exhibit of Jacques Lowe's Pictures. Lowe was the personal photographer for John and Robert Kennedy and more than 40,000 of his negatives were in vaults at the World Trade Centre in New York. They were all destroyed on 9/11 but fortunately he had saved contact sheets which were through modern technology were restored to become bigger-than-life displays.
Bibliophiles Take Note!!!!

Go to the original Half Price Books on E. Northwest Hwy. (just east of Central Expressway, you can see the sign as you whizz by.) It's huge, it's cheap, and it's not Barnes and Noble. Inventory? No, they don't have one of those. This is a treasure hunt, that's where the fun lies. They buy used books all day long and you never know what you'll find. There are also a lot of new books at half price - look at the display tables for these. This place is just amazing, I've spent entire days in there shopping and finding tons of bargains. It's also an ecologically sound company that takes an active interest in the community and its employees, so you can spend your money there and feel good about it. You can't buy anything off the website but it usually has some interesting tidbits posted on it.
