Currency Exchange

by bbusley

I'm going to Ireland in three weeks and would like to know the best place (lowest fees, etc) in Dallas to exchange dollars for euros before I go.
Thanks

Re: Currency Exchange

by TexasDave

Nowhere is a 'good' place to exchange money. Bank of America does it free for its customers but the exchange rate is not favorable, and the same applies at airport exchange services. The best way to go is to get a small amount here so you'll have some money in your purse when arriving but from there out use ATM's once you're over there. Again, BofA has reciprocal agreements with Barclay Bank and doesn't charge customers any fees for ATM withdrawals.Other banks may have similar arrangements.

Thanks for the good advice.

I agree that ATMs are your best bet once you get there, but if you really want to get a few before going, you can get some at the American Express office in Preston Center. Be sure to notify your bank that you will be in Ireland before you leave so they won't put a hold on your credit and debit cards.

Travel Tips for Dallas

Not all cowboys

by bbkmomma

If you visit Dallas from outside the United States or (or even from far away within the US), remember we are not all cowboys. Dallas is a friendly and interesting place to visit, and there ARE lots of western things to see and do. But I am more proud of our southern hospitality and friendliness than all the western and cowboy "stuff".
Enjoy your visit and remember that we have wonderful museums, theaters, and some of the best restuarants in the US.

State Fair of Texas

by Sweetberry1

The State Fair of Texas has been running since 1886 and every year in September/October for about 3 weeks, thousands of people travel to Dallas to see exhibits, ride on the rides, and to some, the most important thing, to enjoy all the food the State Fair has to offer.
This is bought with coupons which you can buy in the park. Aside from the usual corny dogs, turkey legs, chicken wings, nachos and candy floss, there is always something new introduced. One year it was deep fried oreo cookies…!
The exhibition halls have a variety of exhibits on display, one of the most popular is the auto exhibit. Each night at 7.15 is the Starlight Parade. Senior Citizens day is on Thursdays where those aged 60+ get to enter the Fair for free.

Exhibit buildings are open from 10 a.m. until 10 p.m.
Museum hours vary.

Watching the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, TX

by saraheg77

Today, I went to the Cotton Bowl! Although the Aggies were outscored today, it was still a fun experience. Our tickets were in the end zone, row 7, but were good for an up close and personal view!

The stadium holds about 70,000 and the turf is natural grass.

Prices for all seats regular seats were $75 for the 2005 Cotton Bowl (sponsored by SBC Communications). Take some sunglasses and check the weather to see if you need a poncho! Also, remember to bring some cash, although there is an atm... it is a bit hard to locate. :)

Real Texas Longhorns

by grandmaR

The Dallas Convention center and Pioneer Plaza, with the sculpture group featuring 70 Texas longhorn steers was the brainchild of developer Trammel Crow. Some felt that it promoted the 'cow town' image which really belonged to Fort Worth, and whereas Dallas was a sophisticated financial center. (There was a similar outcry when Tex Schramm named the football team the Cowboys.) But the $4 million in construction costs were paid by a private foundation, so Trammel Crow got his way.

Except for Pioneer Plaza though, longhorns are most readily seen in Fort Worth.

Texas Through and Through...

by VeronicaG about TEXAS TREASURES

Texas Treasures is stacked floor to ceiling with all things TEXAS--souvenirs, t-shirts, postcards, spices and chilies, wall art (with a Texas flavor, of course) children's cowboy hats, candies, cookie cutters in the shape of armadillos or longhorns and a whole lot more. I just breathed it all in!

You might even want to buy a box of animal crackers with treats in the shape of boots and stars--I sent three boxes to our grandkids. This shop is located at The Galleria, a large indoor mall.

It was fun to search through this shop to spot souvenir gifts or mementos. I'd recommend a visit to Texas Treasures for that unique Western gift. Unique souvenirs from Texas--yahoo! moderately prices
