Easter weekend in Dallas

by SkyKat

Hello all!
I'll be in Dallas over the Easter weekend, staying downtown by the Galleria. I've been to Dallas before and have been to a couple of museums downtown, and had been to a nice pedestrian area with a lot of restaurants and bars (don't remember the name). I'm looking for a wide variety of things to do-a nice dinner at a non-chain restaurant, a non-country music bar, possibly some outlet shopping, a museum or something I may not have thought of. I will likely be on my own, as I can't be sure my colleagues will care to join me, so safety is also key(especially in the evening) and since it's a holiday weekend, I'm sure it might be a bit quiet too. Thanks for any tips!

If you're staying near the Galleria that is not close to downtown at all. There is a nice outlet mall, Grapevine Mills, a little North of DFW airport, about a 10-15 minute drive from the Galleria. A neat area to explore is actually in Ft. Worth, about a 20-30 min drive away. The Stockyards area brings back the Old West and the museum area has the Amon Carter(for Southwestern art)which is right next to the Kimbell(excellent general art).
Although there is some mass transportation available, the Dallas- Ft. Worth area is is really drive-yourself territory. You'd be better off with a rental car.

If you are in town and looking for a non-chain restaurant, Gloria's is a nice place for Latin food, as well as Primo's on McKinney Avenue for Tex-Mex. Babe's is an excellent place for Southern cooking, with a couple locations in Dallas. If you are into steak, Bob's Chop House always has some interesting celebrities in on weekends.
For music, choose to go to Deep Ellum or Lower Greenville Avenue for live music. If you want outlet shopping, there is Grapevine Mills or the Allen Outlet Malls. Allen is directly north on highway 75 (take 635 east to 75 north).

I hope this gives you some options. If you need any further advice, you can reply here or email me and I would be glad to help.

You will need a rental car as stated above.

Grapevine Mills is a nice outlet mall and 10 minutes from the mall is downtown Grapevine and you will like that as well. many food choices there.

Dowtown Ft worth has much more to see and do than downtown Dallas especially on the weekend.

Thank you all for your suggestions. I have rented a car and have put the mall and Fort Worth on my list. Any ideas for an evening out alone?

The West End is likely the safest for you to enjoy alone. Lower Greenville where Gloria's is would also be fairly safe. There are a lot of singles in both areas, so you will definitely not be out of place sitting alone.

Any other weekend, we could have got a VT meeting together, but unfortunately, I am in East Texas this weekend with family!

Best of luck!

Travel Tips for Dallas

I love to go to Mustang Canyon...

by Plano

I love to go to Mustang Canyon in Los Colinas and visit the mustangs playing in the water. They are awesome. taking my husband to Mustang Canyon on our first date. Even though it was very cold it was beautiful. After we got married we went back to see the horses and stayed in the Four Seasons nearby on our wedding night.

Weather

by keeweechic

Dallas offers famous Texas blue skies, bright sunshine and clean fresh air – well almost. Hot spells do occur and they are HOT - up to 44C. August is usually the worst month for heat. Unfortunately if you are in the major cities, you will have the bad pollution days when it is hot as well and high allergy days.

The average January temperature being 13C. Be prepared for ice and the very rare appearance of snow as well.. usually only a day!.

Red River Shootout

by keeweechic

The Red River Shootout weekend is held every year in October at the Cotton Bowl during the Texas State Fair. It is a fierce football rivalry between the Texas Longhorns and OU (Oklahoma University) Sooners which began some 99 yrs ago and so much tradition has built up on both sides over the years. There are many who believe that this match is college football’s best and most intense rivalry game and it is certainly one of the longest-running rivalries in college football played on a neutral field. While Texas supporters want the Longhorns to win, Texas retailers hope for an OU win. When that happens, some of the best turnover for the year, occurs over that weekend. Beware of the West End area during celebration times, no matter who wins.

Southfork Ranch - JR Country

by keeweechic

If there is one thing that is associated with Dallas, that is the world famous Southfork Ranch and the TV. series 'Dallas'. The ranch has attracted millions of visitors ever since it became the homestead of the T.V. family, the Ewing clan. Its probably not quite the image you would imagine while driving up the long drive way.

First what you see is the Visitors Centre and the Convention centre and a carpark full of cars and tour buses.

You can see the actual homestead - a little smaller than you would have imagined going by the t.v. series - by driving further on down the road from the main visitors entrance. To view the homestead you actually have to take a tour from the Visitors Centre.

There are several items of memorabilia you can recognise from the series including Lucy's wedding dress and Jock's Lincoln Continental. A guided tram tour drives you around the ranch grounds and stops at Miss Ellie's Deli and shop. I had just missed one tour and I wasn't that much of a fan. Just seeing the Ranch was enough for me.

Located just 10 minutes from the Plano Centre, Southfork is open daily.

K Road to right on Parker Road 5.5 miles East from US 75.

Good Mix of Young Professionals

by Bwent26 about Quarter Bar

Quarter Bar in Dallas's Uptown area is definitely worth checking out. The crowd is a mix of young professional types and is usually pretty packed. Drink prices were about average. Pretty Casual dress code
