Great days in Dallas, but still need little help here.

by VincentLi

I have been in Dallas for more than a week. great place, very nice people.

But I want to buy a cow-boy hat like this one in the link:

do you guys know where could I find something like that in Dallas or Plano

Thank you for your help

Cavender's Boot City has tons of cowboy hats (see link below). They may not have that exact hat, but you could buy a simple black hat from there and the gold part to go around it separately too.

You could also google "Dallas western stores" or something similar and call them and ask what they have. Just a thought.

Travel Tips for Dallas

"Private Clubs" and the Unicard system

by Rillifane

Texas laws concerning the selling of alcoholic beverages allow each locality to determine for itself if the sale will be permitted. And by locality the law means that each precinct (a tiny political subdivision) determines this for itself.

The result is that you can cross the street in Dallas and find you have entered a "dry" precinct where alcohol sales are prohibitted.

The solution for this nonsense is for drinking or eating establishments which wish to sell alcohol in a "dry" area to constitute themselves as a "private club."

So don't be surprised if you are asked by your bartender or waitress if you are a "member" when you place your drink order.

No worry though because if you're not you'll discover that the membership requirements are rather lax. Indeed, if you're over 21 and and maintaining homeostasis you've met the requirements and membership is generally free and can be conferred immediately.

Most such "private clubs" use a service called Unicard which maintains the records which the law requires concerning club membership. Your server will take your name, address and birthdate and issue you a temporary membership card that is good in all establishments which are part of the Unicard system.

When I lived in Dallas there...

When I lived in Dallas there were mainly white people and hispanic people living close to me. Be courteous and say hello. Tip at restaurants if the service is good only. Don't use terminology that is derogatory to hispanics in the area or to the African Americans either for that matter. Treat people the way you want them to treat you, but be cautious at the same time.

Dallas Mavericks - Pro Basketball

by geanster

I think there's always something fun in going to a large venue like the new American Airlines Center and watching a professional team, be it the Dallas Mavericks or The Dallas Stars play. Something fun about the comraderie of everyone joining together in sending up positive vibes trying to urge their team to win. The sea of blue and green at the basketball games, the clappers and noise-makers, the wave, the beer and concessions, etc. If you're into watching Basketball and are going to be in Dallas during the season, why not check the Dallas Maverick's website for the game schedule to see if there are any games you'd be interested in checking out. Regular season 2003-2004 single game tickets will go on-sale October 4th 2003 at 10 a.m.

Tickets will be available through all Ticketmaster locations, by calling 214.747.MAVS or at the American Airlines Center South Box Office.

I listed Old City Park as off...

I listed Old City Park as off the beaten path. For any one interested it is a must see place. I like history and that is why I went to see it. From all over Texas they have gathered well preserved historical buildings and moved them to a park inside the city of Dallas. To walk there is like visiting a town of 100 years in the past. We got some great old souvenir school books for my father there. One of the ladies showed us how she cooked her dinner. Many people in costume to guide you through the park. Old City Park is closed on Mondays.

Farmers Market - Crafts

by keeweechic

There are many decorative pieces of handmade pottery and other items from throughout the US and Mexico. The vibrant pottery is always stunning to browse through. There is also the traditional pewterware from Mexico.

The Market is open Sunday thru Saturday 7am to 6pm.
