travel into Mexico from El Paso for non-US citizens

by kme123

I'm going to be in El Paso in a month's time, and would really like to go into Mexico via the footbridge. I'm British, and it's not clear from the US Embassy website whether or not non-US citizens without a visa (I qualify for the visa waver programme) can cross into Mexico and back again.
Any knowledge on this gratefully received!

Yes, you can walk into Juarez from El Paso and return with the visa you have. I went there with someone from Singapore in the fall and there was no problem. There isn't any immigration checkpoint going into Mexico until you go 25 miles into the country.
Actually you are allowed to leave the US and go to Mexico, Canada and the near islands of the Carribean and then return without getting a new visa. I did the same thing going to Canada with someone from Japan on New Year's day.

Travel Tips for El Paso

Downtown

by DrewV

It's a typical American thing, but downtowns tend to suck nowadays. Unless you're a really big city (and not LA), your downtown will be deserted by 6 PM every night and completely empty on the weekends. I don't know why I'm putting this in the general category....

Fire escapes

by matcrazy1

Numerous buildings of historic downtown El Paso have typical fire escape, a special kind of emergency exit, usually mounted to the outside of a building. Well, it's a local custom not specific for El Paso, but for American high rise residential buildings constructed at the end of the 19th century and even more in the first half of 20th century. But I have never seen so many buildings equipped in fire escapes as in downtown El Paso. Apart from that I have almost never seen fire escapes in Poland. I guess, many fires in El Paso have forced architects of residential buildings to add fire escape to their designs. A patent for a fire escape in the USA was first registered in 1887. Or

A typical fire escape of El Paso consists of a number of horizontal platforms (usually steel gratings), one at each story of a building, with ladders or stairs connecting them. The ladder from the lowest level of the fire escape to the ground may be fixed, but more commonly it swings down on a hinge or slides down along a track. The moveable designs allow occupants to safely reach the ground in the event of a fire but prevent persons from accessing the fire escape from the ground at other times, such as in the middle of the night to perpetrate a burglary or vandalism.

Every Path Round Here Is Beaten

by DrewV

This isn't really off the beaten path, since in a town the size (medium) and importance (big) of El Paso, most paths are pretty well beaten. That said, you might check out the area around the university for cheap eats and reasonable nightlife. The kids are all right.

I would recommend burritos. In fact, I woudl recommend burritos all the time, no matter where you are. One of my dreams is to go back to Belgium and open a "Burriterie" in Brussels, because once you try a little bit of love wrapped in a tortilla, you can't stop. I knew a guy in Charlotte, NC, who quit his job in bank marketing and opened Charlotte's first burrito place -- hugely successful. Lines out the door and around the block. And I make a mean burrito -- marinated chicken grilled to perfection, sauteed onions and peppers, fresh guacamole, queso, chunky salsa with a hint of cilantro and cumin... Can you tell that I'm hungry?

This really hard as there are...

by globughm

This really hard as there are so many types of food, Mexican; Tex-Mex and New Mexico style, German, Italian, Chinese, Steak, and more. State Line which serves steak, Bar-b-que and some Mexican is great. There is a small out of the way authenic 'whole-n-the-wall' type place called Mundo's which is very good.
the price is medium low but it is as close to the neighborhood mom and pop places that I have found. It is family run and a favorite of locals. it has msotly 'salsa music' and tile floors. This is not a fine dining experience but a good idea of what the tradional daily Mexican food realy is. chicken enchiladas
