Travel Tips for Ennis
Ennis Historic District
by VeronicaG
As we walked along some of Ennis' red brick streets we noticed the classic style architecture of the Ennis National Bank, established in 1883. It sits in the center of the of town's historic district.
Ennis is similar to many towns in that it's historic district was almost lost to progress and a yard fire which grew out of control in the 1940's.
By the 1950's older residents could not keep up with the maintainence their homes required. Newer businesses came into the area, tearing down former dwellings to make way for expansion.
A breath of fresh air came in 1977 in the form of the Main Street Program, a means to improve the condition of small towns throughout Texas. Funds were available through the government to fix decaying sidewalks and improve sewage. Ennis began refurbishing in 1981 to 'preserve the remaining historic assets' of the town.
Bluebonnet Trails
by keeweechic
The Bluebonnet trails are held annually – usually the third weekend of April except when Easter falls that weekend. Three main trails are set and maps are supplied from the visitor’s centre. Because of their profuseness in this area, In 1997, Ennis was named the Official Bluebonnet Trail of Texas. There are 40 miles of areas where the bluebonnets and other wildflowers are most prominent. These cobalt blue flowers can be seen popping up everywhere and when in a cluster, produces a wonderful blue carpet. After your finish your drive you can then join the festival at downtown Ennis which goes over 3 days with local crafts, Czech food, entertainment and of course you can buy your own bags of bluebonnet seeds to take home.
The Bluebonnet Trails
by keeweechic
The Ennis area is known for their spring showing of bluebonnets and some 42 miles of trails which have been created there to drive around. The Texas Legislature named them “The Official Bluebonnet Trail of Texas.” Bluebonnets are the state flower of Texas and their wider spread of distribution in the state was instigated by President Lyndon B Johnson’s wife (Lady Bird Johnson) in her attempt to beautify Texas. The cobalt blue flowers pop up along freeways, carpet the hills and paddocks and pretty much flower wherever seeds are dropped. Their showing draws something like 50,000 people every year.
The Indian Legend
by keeweechic
The legend of the flower tells of a young Indian chief who delighted in the sunset colours and glows he often sat and watched, His dream was to be able to paint this beauty but all he had was a buckskin, stiff heavy brushes and crude war paints. After one night seeing one of the best sunsets he had ever seen, he heard a voice telling him to look down. By his feet he found a graceful plant shaped like a delicate brush wet with paint which matched the red of the sunset. He raised the tip to his soft buckskin and suddenly the colour transferred. Other brushes also sprang up dripping with the various colours of the sunset. He plucked each one and used them to create his picture. After he has finished his glorious picture, he looked down to where he had tossed all the used brushes and he saw they had all taken root and multiplied creating a striking carpet of beauty of the paintbrush.
