Fort Worth - November

by ickle_hobit

Hi

I am considering a trip to Fort worth in November.

Could you please tell me:

(1) What the weather is generally like in November

(2) Whether any of you have stayed at Etta's Place (this is where I am looking at staying because I have read it is difficult to get to downtown from a lot of motels because of the highways) so presumeably, as this is in Sundance Square, it will be the best place to stay for the nightlife and travelling to all Fort Worth has to offer. Is Sundance Square a safe place to stay?

(3) How long to stay for. I am thinking of 4-5 nights. Is this long enough? Perhaps I could put in a day trip to Dallas, as I believe it is about an hour away on the train.

Any advice would be welcome.

Helen

I haven't stayed at Etta's Place, but I have stayed at the Worthington which is about a block away, I think. For me, the area is safe enough...if nothing else, most of the police in downtown hang out here because this is where most of the people are...

4-5 nights? I like FW, but for maybe a long weekend...what were you planning on doing and seeing?

4-5 nights would be good if you're looking to go slow and make in-depth investigations of the museums and the zoo. if u run out of stuff to do, dallas is next door...arlington, grapevine, and granbury also have sites worth seeing. it got really cold for a week or two this past november...but that's not the norm...winters are usually mild. pack for cold and warm weather.

I have worked downtown Fort Worth for 8 years and live just a few miles away. The weather in November is normally very pleasant, probably one of the best times of the year to visit. In addition to Etta's Place I would recommend The Ashton which is a small upscale hotel and the Worthington Renaissance which is a large hotel. Both are just 3-5 blocks from Sundance Square and the whole area is quite safe. Depending on your interests, there is plenty to do in and around Fort Worth to fill 4 days. Be sure to visit the stockyards area by day and by night, since it is two different scenes. They have quite interesting tours during the day, there are shops, restaurants, etc. At night Billy Bob's is a country/western dance place and has well known performers. The museum district has several very good art museums (the Kimball, Amon Carter, Modern). You can ride a train from downtown Fort Worth to Dallas which has lots to see in the West End, Deep Ellum, their museum district, McKinney Avenue, etc. Hope you enjoy your trip. Carol

Thank you, I have had a look. Looks like you were having a good time at Billy-Bob's, even if it is an over-priced tourist trap!

Travel Tips for Fort Worth

Don't listen to people from Dallas

by aemaya

They are so busy telling people that Fort Worth sucks, they never have stopped to reflect that they have never left the ugly, concrete, historyless, plastic city we call Dallas. I can't tell you how many Dallosers I have kidnapped and forced to visit Fort Worth . Once they realize they can see with out squinting through a murky haze, that we have trees, museums, and history, that no one is trying to shoot them on the highway, that we smile, and that it doesn't matter how much money you make here, I can't get them to go home. They want to move in. Luckily hospitality is found in Fort Worth also. The way I felt when I walked into my living room an saw a cloud floating into my apartment. It is difficult to find domestic highrises in Texas. The view is breathtaking. Seeing a cloud in my livingroom was, for lack of better terms, priceless.

Arts Festival Exhibitors

by keeweechic

Participants in the Main Street Fort Worth Arts Festival have to go through a selection process which requires them to submit three slides of their work along with the application and style of set-up. A jury then selects the artists based purely on their goods, their name is unknown to the jury.

Out of usually 1,000 applicants, 200 are selected so the standard of the festival is very high.

Carswell Air Force Base - Fort Worth

by Maria250

"The city hosts..extensive aerospace activities with large airplane, aircraft parts, and helicopter manufacturing plants. It is the center for north central Texas' agri-business, and the home of a large retired military community, mostly former Air Force personnel who utilize the Carswell AFB facilities."

Arlington

by btex

Between Dallas and Ft. Worth, there's Arlington. It has various forms of entertainment: Six Flags amusement park, water parks, Texas Rangers Baseball, a wax museum, and much more. I haven't been to 6 Flags in years, but, it was usually pretty fun...when I was a kid. The Texas Rangers have really been struggling for the past few years...but it's still enjoyable to go to a game...be sure to grab a beer and a hot dog - it improves the experience. Anyway, Arlington is a good place to go if you're looking for pre-packaged, family fun.

More than Antiques in the Cultural District

by VeronicaG about Leigh Boyd

Leigh Boyd's is stacked with large, old furniture pieces, small ceramics, interesting home accessories, silky French soaps, fine French linen, eye-catching lamps, a roomful of decorating books and antiques of all types.

It's always an experience wandering through this shop. I particularly like the fact that they showcase artwork, too, making it a stop on Ft. Worth's Gallery Night. On a recent visit, craftswoman Shayna Weeden was displaying her jewelry (pic #2). I found a great pair of cascading light green agate earrings--just had to have them.

Leigh Boyd offers live music on pleasant Gallery Nights. Musicians squeeze themselves and their instruments onto the narrow walkway in front of the shop to offer some great entertainment.
