A Feel of the West

Cowtown and the Stockyards are unique. You definitely know you are in cowboy territory. There are some great shops filled with Texas souvenirs, western clothing shops for all your tassled shirts, cowboy hats and of course the carefully crafted hand carded boots in any colour you can imagine. Go into the leather shops and see the handcrafted saddles - you would have to be serious to ever buy one at $3,000 plus but they are exquisite. Make sure you get there in time for the Fort Worth Herd trail down Exchange St. Finish off your day or break it up, with a visit to one of the great restaurants there. You won't regret your visit.
The Longhorn Drive

The police are followed by the ‘cattle drive’ of the Longhorns… ‘mosey’ing’ their way down Main street to the stockyards. These are the same herd that do the daily trott up Exchange street in the stockyards. Impressive animals.
Turn the Locomotive

One interesting thing for those who haven't grown up with trains is to watch the locomotive engine turned around on a turntable so that it can go the other way. The antique steam locomotive comes in from Grapevine Texas to the Stockyard Station in Fort Worth. Turn-around in Grapevine is on a 1927 Santa Fe Railroad turntable.
If you don't want to ride in from Grapevine, you can take a shorter trip, because while in Fort Worth, the train makes a cross-city excursion to the city's south side along ten-mile course to Eighth Avenue. After arriving in Fort Worth from Grapevine, the locomotive pulls onto the ca. 1925 turntable to head south for a 10-mile trek along the famous Chisholm Trail. The one-hour journey goes through Trinity Park near Fort Worth's Cultural District and the Fort Worth Zoo.

The other vast gardens of the conservatory are free. Located just off of University Drive near the Cultural District in Trinity Park.
