Travel Tips for Fredericksburg
The Old Gillespie County Jail
by VeronicaG
As we drove along the side streets of Fredericksburg, we came across The Old Gillespie County Jail. It was constructed in 1885 and is actually the fourth jail built for the town.
Notice the fortress-like appearance to this sturdy construction and the iron bars on the windows. At one time, the exterior wall surrounding the jail was topped with glass to discourage escape! I don't think one could mistake it's purpose, do you?
Originally, prisoners were held upstairs and the jailer's rooms were at the lower level. A "lock up" was also downstairs and was later used for a women's cell. Upstairs two steel cells were located on the east wall, while maxiumum security was at the back of the building. It was here that a wood heater sat. When it grew cold, prisoners held elsewhere in the building were moved to this area for the warmth.
In 1939, the jail became living quarters for custodian, William Heimann, and was converted to allow him to live comfortably with his new wife. Later, the building was used for storage. It was restored in the 1970's and is part of the annual Candlelight Tour of Homes held in December. It is not opened for tours otherwise.
The jail is located on 117 West San Antonio St., Fredericksburg, Tx

Drive the 13 mile Willow City Loop
by 807Wheaton
This drive is an excellent way to see some of the Hill Country. We drove through "open range" areas and saw some of the cattle grazing along the roadside and in the fields. Drive slowly, because this is a twisty road and it's impossible to see an animal up ahead if you're driving too fast.
Largest brew pub in the area
by basstbn about Fredericksburg Brewing Company
This appeared to be the most happening place in F-burg on the evenings we were in town. The night I ate here, Nancy was filling tired and a little under the weather, so I went alone and sat at the bar. The wait staff and clientele were warm and outgoing. Nice atmosphere in this restored 1890s rock building. A mixed sausage grill with red cabbage - best German food I had in this Texas trip. The highlight may well have been the smooth, dark porter on draught. Lots of flavor without being heavy or weighty. I haven't found a porter as good since.
In Lieu of Lunch
by VeronicaG about Fredericksburg Ice Cream Parlor
We knew we'd be meeting our friends in a short while and we had not eaten lunch yet, so we opted for an ice cream cone. This would suffice until we could join our friends for dinner later. They were driving in from League City, Tx.
The Fredericksburg Ice Cream Parlor offered a number of delicious choices--I selected 'Moo Tracks', which was vanilla ice cream with chunks of Reeses Peanut Butter Cups and Chocolate Chips and I think a Fudge Swirl....so good!
We sat near the front window in order to people watch and to perhaps spy our friends driving into town. A brochure picked up from the Visitor's Center had a 10% off coupon towards any purchase here, but we didn't have it at the time.
After consuming our cones, we drove to the B&B just in time to welcome our friends to Fredericksburg.
LBJ NHP: The Sauer-Beckmann Farmstead
by msbrandysue
Once we stopped by the visitors center and got our free audio cd for the car, the cd leads you to The Sauer-Bechmann Farmstead, a living history farm. There you'll find real animals, real crops, and real people dressed in period costumes.
I enjoyed chasing the turkeys and sheep around. The chickens and roosters were funny too. They have a few houses you can go into, as well. The size is baffling! So small...
There were a lot of kids here and they loved it, so I would definitely recommend stopping here for a while. It doesn't have anything to do with LBJ himself, but puts you back in the time of his childhood. I think it really adds to the next portion of the tour...the boyhood homes.
