President Lyndon B. Johnson
by msbrandysue
Other than filling in as President after JFK's death, I didn't know much about LBJ before visiting his National Historical Park. Now I could write a book...just kidding! I do have some good stories to tell, though, for sure.
So, I couldn't put this tip under Things To Do but wanted to add the pictures from the park about all the programs that LBJ started.
He was who signed in our first environmental laws such as the Clean Air and Drinking Water laws. He also signed many of the Welfare programs. His Great Society programs also included many national programs for education as well. The programs that the plaques talk about specifically are:
*Head Start-a preschool program for children who are not old enough for elementary school (5 years of age) but whose parents cannot afford day care.
*Clean Air Act
*Pesticide Control
*Water Quality Control Act
*Wilderness System Act
*Solid Waste Disposal Act
*Endangered Species
*Wild and Scenic Rivers Act
*Water Pollution
*Elementary and Secondary Education Act

by energygirl
Take a trip to Luckenbach while you are in Fredericksburg, its pretty cool, but it is definately a short trip.. There's literally 4 buildings in this town. But they have GREAT cherry limeade.. and pretty cool music.. So defiately check it out.
Also, drive down Hwy 1, through the Lyndon B Johnson land, theres a pretty neat church and the cemetary thaat Lady Bird was buried in is right across from the church..
WINERY TO THE WHITE HOUSE
by Rich62
THIS IS THE BECKER VINEYARD AND WINERY, located 11 miles east of Fredericksburg on hwy 290. (2 miles east of the Grape Creek Winery). The Becker wines are sometimes used for banquets at the White House, at least they are while Texan George W. Bush is President.
The tasting room is elegant and beautiful, and is stocked with excellent wine-related gifts. our only problem is that we do not care for their wines. I think you might like them if you prefer dry wines. Ordinarily we like a semi-sweet Riesling, but we do not care for their Riesling. But thats just our personal preference. Tastings are free (except for reserve wines), so go ahead and try for yourself.
A Lunch Among the Herbs
by VeronicaG about Fredericksburg Herb Farm
After ambling through the gardens, we made our way to the restaurant, anticipating a very good meal! The Herb Farm believes in the philosophy of offering good healthful foods that are grown organically.
After a few minutes wait on the restaurant's front porch, we were shown to a table on the shady outside deck, where we appreciated a view of the herb gardens. A large white cat was curled up on one of the chairs. He seemed right at home with us!

We ordered raspberry ice tea and the Bouquet Dill Chicken Salad--diced chicken breast with toasted pecans, green onions and pineapple in a dill dip with baby greens and fresh fruit.
There was a gentle breeze throughout the meal and together with the pretty garden setting, made for a very relaxing occasion!

Nimitz Steamboat Hotel
by basstbn
Built in the early 1850s, this restored frontier hotel now houses the history of Fredericksburg and the story of Admiral Chester Nimitz, a native of the city. Nimitz served as commander of the Pacific Fleet during the Second World War. Part of the Admiral Nimitz State Historic Site. Many displays of historical interest here, including a 15-foot scale model of the aircraft carrier Nimitz.
