Pirate History of Galveston???
by msbrandysue
Interesting history here!
While walking along the seawall I was reading all the plaques that begin the 10 mile stretch. I was reading part of the coastal birding trail when at the bottom there was an interesting history fact.
The sign read, " While Galveston is actually named after Bernardo de Galvez, a Spanish colonial governor and general, Galveston was one named 'Campache' by pirates Jean and Pierre LaFitte in the early 1800s!"
Go figure....
(I thought it was cool)
Love Those Little Nooks and Side Streets....
by VeronicaG
As we grew to know Galveston, it became apparent that like most bustling places there are still little nooks where one can appreciate a bench or quiet sidestreet on which to collect oneself.
Who doesn't like people watching or having a moment to plan the next step of your exploration? We took advantage of some of these tranquil places. Galveston exuded history, but aside from this, we discovered it is a friendly place that welcomes the visitor with open arms. We'll definitely be returning!
Greek in Galveston
by Jefie about Mediterranean Chef
Mediterranean Chef is located on the Strand and although it doesn't look like much from outside (well, doesn't look like much from inside either!), the food was actually very good and not expensive. Our waiter was from Lebanon and seemed pretty happy to speak French with me so it made for a really enjoyable meal!
Very Good Seafood!
by aja28 about Casey's
Casual dining. Good seafood. Reasonably priced. We used to take visitors here. It was always a hit. The blackened grilled shrimp is great.
Also like the stuffed shrimp, stuffed crab, and soft-shelled crab when it's in season.
They used to serve a free small dessert with all meals.
Their dinner salad with their house dressing is really good.

The Bishop's Palace
This ornate building was begun in 1886 and completed in 1893, at a cost of $250,000. The building was originally home to the family of Walter Gresham, a former Confederate colonel and U.S. Congressman. The Catholic diocese owned the structure from the 1920s to middle 1950s. The palace is ranked among the top 100 homes in the nation for its architectural significance, and features woodwork of rosewood, satinwood and white mahogany, and various fireplaces from all over the world. The mantle in the front ballroom won first prize at the Philadelphia World's Fair in 1876. Tours offered every 1/2 hour. Gift shop on premises.
Adults $6; Seniors 65+: $5; Teens: $3; Kids 12 & Under: $1
