Travel Tips for Galveston

The Cotton Exchange-2102 Exchange St.

by VeronicaG

This building replaced the original one of 1879 and represents Texas's cotton era. It was constructed in 1940 by architect Ben Milam and is of white block and polished granite, looking more modern than its neighbors.

Compared to the lovely detailed buildings surrounding it, I think it looks rather dull, but I wanted to highlight it for its involvement in Texas's supremely commercial crop of earlier days--COTTON--which brought this state on an even par with other movers and shakers in world financial markets.

Nature Reserve

by Suet

Further down the beach there is a small nature reserve, well away from the heady nightlife of Galveston. It's possible to see pelicans and diving birds, walk all along the beach front and spot the ships way out to sea. I looked for seal and dolphin and saw the dolphin riding the bow wave of a ship. Unforgettable.

We looked for shells and interesting things along the beach, I searched for pelicans and then the boys got bored and decided to go Downtown.......

Awesome Mexican Food

by aja28 about La Estacion

This is some of the best Tex Mex I've ever eaten. I miss this place. You'll find locals from every walk of life frequenting this place. If it gets super busy - people will offer seats at their table. I just love this place. They have the best rice in the world AND the best fresh tomato salsa. The breakfast burritos are to die for. I love the tacos and the cheese enhiladas....everything is good here!

Nice Lunch Spot

by aja28 about Phoenix Restaurant & Bakery

Nice cafe with outdoor seating. I usually get a lunch sandwhich/salad/soup combo. Always quite good. Get a cream puff or napolean for dessert. Their cakes are awesome. I used to get them for special occasions. Their pastries are great, too. They also have a decent breakfast. Soup/salad/sandwhich combo plate

all pastries and cakes are great
The chicken salad and seafood salad are really good

Walk / shop / have fun on the Strand!

by Jefie

The Strand truly is the heart of Galveston. You can easily spend an entire afternoon shopping for beachwear and candies (there are some great candy and chocolate stores!), and there are lots of restaurants, bars and cafes to choose from if you wish to eat or simply have a drink. Also, there are some great buildings to look at if you're into architecture, and all year long different activities take place on the Strand (Dickens on the Strand, Mardi Gras Carnival, etc.).

Postoffice Street, also located in the historic Strand area, is another great street with bars, restaurants and cafe, perhaps a bit less touristy and all the more enjoyable for it!
