The Basement of the Alamo

by LornaMoravec

The title is a joke from "PeeWee's Big Adventure," but what I want to do is to visit the basements of some of the old stone or brick houses in Galveston, perhaps some of the ones that are open to tourists for a fee. I would like to see the basements and learn the history of the heating systems in these old houses, and the history of heating on Galveston Island. I would also like to know of any periods in the past hundred years when any of these old houses were vacant and liable to going down-hill.
This reminds me of the history of the Battleship Texas, which I have looked into extensively. It holds the same fascination.

RE: The Basement of the Alamo

by bocmaxima

Basements are actually pretty rare in Southeast Texas because of flooding, so I'm not sure that you'll find any. But, if you go on a tour of one of the historic mansions like the Menard House, I'm sure the guide has at least some knowledge of how the homes were heated. For the rest of them, you can probably contact the Galveston Historical Society before you leave and get someone who really knows their stuff to just call you back: http://www.galvestonhistory.org/
I know that up until the mid-20th century, central heating was sort of a luxury and that, since Galveston is temperate and rarely gets below freezing, most more modest homes probably had just a fireplace.

Travel Tips for Galveston

Visit Moody Gardens.
Moody...

by barcodex

Visit Moody Gardens.
Moody gardens is a great place to visit, you can spend the whole day here with your family. Every interest can be satisfied, you can choose from Aquarium, Rainforest Pyramid, Discovery Pyramid, a triple deck sternwheeler The Colonel, and, of course, the IMAX theater.
Rainforest Pyramid is a covered artifical tropical forest with plants you can find only in Amazon's Selva in real life. And IMAX is a 3d-movie theater - great place!
For more information on this attraction, please refer to Galveston Island Internet site. Rows of people in IMAX cinema watching 3d movie. This is really fun to look a lot of people in weird glasses with their hands leaning to 3d illusions in front of them. 3d cinema is cool anyway. IMAX theatre in moody gardens has several different films showed on its screen. On the photo: my colleague Rooman (on the right) and I, sitting in IMAX thatre next to hundreds of other people, wearing that special glasses required for creating 3D effect.

Texas Crab Festival

by H-TownJourneyman

The Texas Crab Festival, which is actually held in Crystal Beach on the Bolivar peninsula, is an annual event held on Mother's Day weekend in the spring. It is a great small town carnival-like celebration, and it seems that the whole local community is in attendance all 3 days! You find endless amounts of food such as boiled crawfish, fried gator, corn dogs, and of course, crab meat prepared in numerous different fashions! There are small carnival rides and events for the kids, and throughout the day and evening there are live bands playing, generally of the country or classic rock variety. Admission is only $5 for adults, and free for kids under 12. And all of the refreshments and rides are very cheap. If you enjoy small town and local festivals, this one is not to miss! Crystal Beach is just a boat ride away from Galveston, with the Bolivar Ferry providing access from the island to the Bolivar peninsula. The festival grounds are located just off of Hwy. 87 at Gregory Park in Crystal Beach, and here are the directions on how to get there from Galveston and the ferry.

Rosenberg Library

by msbrandysue

The Rosenberg Library was founded in 1871 and is the oldest public library in Texas in continuous operation. I always like checking out the public libraries of a city.

However, this experience was VERY scary. There were many poor folks straggling around outside the door but I really needed to use the restroom. My mom and I both walked towards the women's room and there was a very scary looking fellow following us. We both went inside and into a stall when we heard the door open. Someone walked in and then walked out. There was no one else around the restroom at that time except for the man. We were terrified. We quickly finished our business and left the area.

BEWARE!!!!

Best Soul Food on the Planet!

by aja28 about Simp's Kitchen

Don't let the looks of this place fool you. Simp's Kitchen is a Galveston Landmark. You'll see people lining up early for lunch. It's a favorite of the business lunch crowd. When I lived in Galveston it was a treat to eat at Simps. They had limited air conditioning - and the small radio was always blaring a scratchy gospel station. The staff is friendly and obviously know what they are doing. Everything here is wonderful. Go hungry! The stuffed shrimp is the best I've had. The ox tail is good. Pork chops are good. Fried chicken is lovely. I love the sides: fresh green beans, potato salad, greens, butter beans, cornbread. My mouth is watering. If you don't mind the lack of atmosphere and area real foody - don't miss this place!

See the History of the Seawall

by msbrandysue

The seawall was built in 1902 after the most devastating natural distaster (hurricane) in 1900. It runs for 10 miles and is across from various shops and restaurants.

While walking, running, biking, etc. down the seawall make sure to check out the history behind Galveston and the tragic hurricane. There are many statues and national landmark signs to read while learning about the importance of this Galveston saint watching over the island.

The most interesting? There was an orphan asylum that was destroyed along with 10 nuns and 90 children. Three boys were the only survivors found at sea. Right there on the sea wall....
