Travel Tips for Galveston

Ball, Hutchings and Sealy Buildings

by VeronicaG

It's hard to miss this striking building, which overlooks Strand Street. It was constructed (1896) in the classical revival style by architect, N.J.Clayton, while retaining some Victorian elements.

It is comprised of gray and pink granite with red sandstone, buff brick and terra cotta decorations and is the earliest example of steel frame construction in Texas. It housed a bank which operated here until 1935.

Recently used as a moving and storage warehouse, it was purchased by Cynthia & George Mitchell in 1985 and refurbished by architects, Ford Powell & Carson. Additional work was done by Dallas architect, Michael Malone, as he designed the Discovery Channel Store in 1994.

Free Fishing Opportunities

by keeweechic

There are plenty of places for Surf Fishermen to throw out their line almost anywhere along the beach. Other free jetties and rock piers are found at Seawall Blvd. at 10th , 17th , 30th and 37th Streets.

The most popular sport fish in the Galveston area is the spotted seatrout which is also known as the speckled trout. Other local fish include Black drum, red drum, flounder, croaker, sheepshead, sand sea trout, gafftopsail catfish, and whiting.

For The Best Burgers In Town...Any Town

by VeronicaG about FUDDRUCKER"S

We first discovered Fuddrucker's when our children were young and we were traveling to S. Carolina. Ever since that time, when we see a Fuddrucker's we stop. They serve the juiciest hamburgers we've ever tasted!

This Fuddrucker's was conveniently located near Strand Street where the DICKENS FESTIVAL was held. As usual, the interior had a funky and nostalgic decor (see photo #2). A salad bar held all sorts of toppings and veggies to add to your entree.

If you're looking for good old American cooking and generous size burgers, Fuddrucker's is the place for you! 'da burgers!

Fantastic Mexican Food

by aja28 about El Nopalito

Another great local Mexican food restuarant. Again - the atmosphere is lacking - but who cares with the great food served at this place. Great for lunch or dinner. I like it all. The caldo de rez is awesome. Tacos al carbon are wonderful. You can't go wrong with anything you order here. It's just yummy.

Greeting the Queen

by VeronicaG

As we selected one of the very elaborately set tables and settled into our seats, the 'Royals' were announced. As we craned our necks, the music began and Queen Victoria and Prince Albert arrived amidst all the pomp due them!

The character of Queen Victoria has been portrayed by Anne Boyd for thirteen years. In past years she was dressed in mourning clothes, to signify her widowhood. This year, since the theme was The Great Exhibition of 1851, created by her husband, she appeared elegantly attired and arm in arm with the Prince, who was portayed by Ken Lane, of British Columbia.

Once they were seated, the feast began! Please see both photos.
