Travel Tips for Galveston

Blum Hardware Building-2211-2223 Strand St.

by VeronicaG

This large building (1871) sits along Strand Street and presently holds an art gallery, gift, clothing and collectible shops. It originally consisted of four separate structures: The Berlocher Building, Henry Runge Coffee Import Company, T.W. House Building and E.S. Wood Building, the latter having a full iron front.

During the early 20th century, the Blum Hardware Company razed the building, creating one large space and for the sake of unity remodeled the facade. It was updated in 1986 by Melton Henry Architects of Houston for real estate developer J.R. McConnell and renamed Old Galveston Square, a shopping arcade. A concrete and steel cornet was designed by artist David Adickes of Houston. This construction is a post modern example of a Victorian Conservatory. Decorative ironwork in the newly designed interior court was done by Joe Pehoski of Salado,Texas.

The building was again remodeled by Eubanks/Bonn Associates, creating a number of shop interiors after Mr. and Mrs. George Mitchell purchased it in 1987. The Mardi Gras Museum is located on the third floor. Please see additional photo for interior photo.

See a dutch boat in the harbour..

by mafootje

When we were walking around Galveston we also went to the harbour because this area looked very inviting..

While walking accros the docks we stumbled on a dutch boat from Smitwijs right here in Texas.

When we got back we learned from my uncle who works on a tug from Smit in the harbour of Rotterdam that the dutch crew on this boat works for a while on this boat and then go back to holland to be replaced by a new crew.

SmitWijs is a combination from two dutch towing companies SMIT and Wijsmuller. They formed a towing venture in 1991 and work worldwide.

More about SmitWijs can be find by clicking on the link.

Stop for a Soda or Ice Cream or Frappicino

by msbrandysue about La King's Confectionery

While we were shopping Shanna wanted to stop for some chocolate. While I was dreaming of eating all the chocolate with no calories, Shanna then snuck off to the ice cream side of the place. While waiting for her I decided to try the coffee shop. Since it felt like 100 degrees I decided to get something cool, since I don't really like ice cream.

Fun place! Great for kids! Has traveling brochures right when you come in if you're looking for your next destination in Galveston/Houston. I had a mocha frappacino. It was good...Not starbucks but that's why they're a different name haha. Shanna had an ice cream cone that was wonderful, she said, as well as some chocolate truffles. If you do buy chocolate be prepared for melting in the summer!

Moody Gardens

by cealonzo

Moody Gardens is a 156 acre site of exhibits and fun for the whole family. The main attraction of Moody Gardens is divided between three pyramids. The first one is the Aquarium Pyramid. It has 2 million gallons of water. People view the ocean habitats while learning about marine life on the planet. The second one is the Discovery Pyramid. It was developed to bring light to the wonders of space for all to see. The third one is the Rainforest Pyramid. The pyramid stands 10 stories tall. It represents the rain forests of Asia, Africa, and South America. It's filled with lush vegetation and exotic birds for all to enjoy.

Public Beach

by msbrandysue

Along the sea wall there are 10 miles of free parking in addition to 10 miles of free, public beach. At certain spots you can rent umbrellas and chairs but other than that, it's byoe (bring your own everything).

You can do all sorts of things here! Boogy boards are abundant across the street for purchase as are anything beach-related. Bring a football, frisbee, etc. Enjoy!

There are lifeguards on duty and signals to show you how safe/cautious the water may be.
