Granbury Square Flat: Horrible Public Relations

The place may look nice – but don’t bother. It’s not worth the headache of dealing with the owner to book this place.

Originally I had a lovely interaction with owner, Harold Secker on the phone, who took my credit card information and reservations to book the room, which was for my groom, a mature man of 43 years of age for the night before our wedding. We wanted a nice quiet out of the way place for him to stay with his brother and we thought the Granbury Square Flat would be ideal for him as it looked spacious, quiet and close to the Inn on Lake Granbury where the wedding is taking place. Not to mention just a short walk from the rehearsal dinner location at Stringfellows. Harold was very sweet and couldn’t have been nicer to work with. I explained that it would just be he and his brother who is in his mid-thirties who would be the only ones staying and that my groom and his three groomsmen would use the flat to get dressed before the wedding. I didn’t think it would be an issue, as none of them drink, smoke, or have children. Harold couldn’t have been any nicer to work with and I told him that we would contact him the month before to confirm our reservations and we ended our conversation.

An hour later I received a insolent call from Harold’s wife, Emily Secker who tried to cancel the reservations. Before I could even inquire as to why, she went on an angry tear about how she didn’t want the bridesmaid spilling wine, leaving the place a mess, children running around and people coming and going. I had to raise my voice just to break in and pause / interrupt her and to ask what she was talking about. She said her husband made a mistake and that the flat is not for functions or large gatherings. I asked who’s having a function or large gathering at the flat, and she said we were.

I explained to her that there’s no function or gathering taking place in her flat, that the groom and his brother would be staying Friday night and getting ready there on the Saturday afternoon before heading over to the wedding (5 blocks away) with two other groomsmen (one of which is the groom’s 65 year old father). After a ton of reassuring she relented and begrudgingly agreed to rent the room, but it was obvious she was not happy to do it.

The next morning I received an email from Emily Secker canceling our reservations. It was obvious she had made her mind up and was convinced since the person staying in her place was part of a wedding that there would be people running around in and out and God know what else, even though the whole wedding party, family / friends are staying 5 blocks away at the Inn on Lake Granbury.

Needless to say, the entire interaction we had with the owner, Emily Secker, was shocking to say the least. This individual is grossly lacking in people skills and has no business dealing with the public, let alone offering accommodations in which she doesn’t want anyone to stay in. We found the entire interaction with Emily to be completely unprofessional and disrespectful.

If you should ever decide to stay at this woman’s place and are attending, God forbid - a wedding nearby or some event – be careful not to breath a word about it or she’ll bat-crazy on you too.

The Iron Horse Inn B & B

This historic 7,000 sq ft house was once a cattle baron’s mansion and took 2 years for three master cabinet makers to build. The home features intricate leaded crystal windows, leaded glass built in cabinets, birds-eye maple floors and antique furniture predating the original home of 1885. There is also a beautiful hand-milled staircase.

There are 7 guestrooms, all with private bath and all lovingly decorated with antiques. Features with some of the suites are a solarium, private balcony as well as the 185 wine cellar suite. One suite is featured in a separate cottage with a wood burning stove.

Windmill Farm B & B: Tolar

This place is quite a unique setting, country atmosphere and amidst some 26 windmills which were used in this part of Texas. The 26 acre property has 2 cabins set up as a bed and breakfast. If you want to get away from it all, this is the place for you. Each cabin has a queen size bed, full bath and a separate living area. A lovely long covered porch runs across of each cabin with rocking chairs to relax in. A homemade continental breakfast is served in each cabin.

Check in between 4 - 7pm with checkout at noon. Children and pets are welcome.

The Nutt Historic Hotel

The 4 star hotel has been lovingly restored. The old dorm style rooms and shared bathrooms have been converted into 7 romantic bedrooms complete with full bathrooms, all decorated in period pieces of the time. Each room is very different. There is also a four star restaurant attached to the hotel on the lower level.
