Comfort Common is the name given to a group of cabins, an Historic Hotel, a carriage house and cottages in Comfort, Texas. The Hotel is on the National register and the Texas Historic register, and has a museum/gift shop inside. There are rooms for guests in the cabins, cottages and carriage house. Comfort was founded by freethinking German immigrants back in the 1880's. The builder of the Common was Peter Joseph Ingenhuett and he also built an opera house a livery stable, a saloon and a mercantile. I've never stayed here myself, but my sister and her husband did and enjoyed it very much. they stayed in the carriage house and were wowed by the furnishings (all from the Victorian era, except the brand new mattresses!). Lodging Recommendation: We stayed with sister in law and her husband in the time share condo they had rented for February
The condo was about 4 blocks from the beach, and had a swimming pool. Some of the younger folk tried it, but nearly froze. Cost was unknown but reasonable I assume, knowing my in laws. Theme: OtherAddress: Port Aransas

My mom and dad stayed here when they visited my sister. We met them at the hotel and I hung out for about five hours with them. The beds are really comfortable (I got in trouble for falling asleep, and I wasn't even sleepy!). The room was nice, with enough pillows, blankets, etc. The bathroom was up to Mom's standards (and that's impossible to meet!) with enough clean towels. The room had a refridgerator and a coffee service, as well as a microwave in it in a coffee or breakfast area. There is a pool available, as well as a spa and exercise room. The hotel is close to the old city, and has easy access to the main roads. Close to a lot of restaurants, too. by keeweechic Adolphus Busch of the Anheuser-Busch Brewing Association put a proposal to the city of Dallas to buy the City Hall property and build a 20 storey hotel. The City accepted and in 1912 the Adolphus Hotel was opened. At that time the French Renaissance Beaux Arts structure was the tallest building in Dallas and was dubbed the 'most beautiful building west of Venice'. In 1981 the original building was restored. The hotel has beautiful artwork and antiques displayed in an old world theme. At the corner of the building is a Budweiser beer bottle shaped turret. The hotel has 428 guestrooms and luxury suites. The French Room is a richly decorated restaurant complete with murals, arches and chandeliers and serves a classic French cuisine. The New York Times comments were "...indisputably the most striking and sumptuous restaurant in Dallas..." and Gourmet Magazine named The French Room one of America's "Top Tables," . It has also been listed on Conde Nast Traveler's Top 20 Restaurants in America, and was awareded Zagat Survey's Top 20 Food Ranking. Theme: HotelAddress: 1321 Commerce Street, Dallas

by keeweechic This property was established during the early 1850?s when a Colonel Henry Clay Swanson, from Alabama, moved to East Texas and settled near Palestine. Along with his brother, the Colonel started purchasing large amounts of land and eventually created a 15,000 acre southern plantation. The home survived the 1946 Palestine tornado which left 15 people dead and served as a temporary morgue for 11 bodies until the road to the town could be cleared. The property was purchased by author/photographer Osjetea Briggs ("A WALK IN MY MOCCASINS") in 1955 and who resided there for over 40 years. Today the property is owned by Carrie O'Brien who has restored the home to its present condition and turned it into an elegant southern plantation bed and breakfast.
There are 4 suites in all to choose from varying from $100 to $150pn. Great pain has been taken to detail in both the menu items and the furnishings. Quite a unique place to stay and well worth the visit. Theme: Bed and BreakfastAddress: 3241 E. US Highway 84 - PalestineDirections: 4 miles from Texas State Railroad

by keeweechic I booked this one off the web before we left knowing that we would probably arrive a little late into Galveston. We were given a room on the 2nd floor which overlooked the main building and out to the water. Certainly comfortable enough and good location. There is a Mexican Restaurant on one side and a big Kroger Supermarket next door if you need to pick up any thing (has a good deli which we used the following night for a light dinner). We were to have spent only one night here but after checking out the next day and realising there was more to see in Galveston (not to mention a hurricane heading for the areas we were heading to) we decided to check back in for another night. They very kindly gave us the same rate. A continental breakfast was included and there was a outdoor heated pool as well.

by keeweechic Comfort Suites Downtown was not quite the location we had been told. We were expecting to be within 2-3 blocks of the River Walk but it was a considerably further than that and definitely required driving. The hotel itself is all suites, very comfortable with full size fridge, microwave, coffee making and a basic breakfast of cereal, bagels/donuts, apples with juice/coffee is included. There is a heated indoor pool and numerous vending machines for all kinds of needs. There is also an outlet for modem use (not cable as we had been told). Well suited to families. The Manager was very helpful but the staff were a lot less knowledgeable. Theme: HotelAddress: 1002 S. Lardo, I-35 Exit 155A, San Antonio

by keeweechic At the time of it's construction in 1926, this hotel was the tallest building west of the Mississippi. The Emily Morgan is a deluxe hotel with 177 rooms and suites. by keeweechic Excelsior House was built in the 1850's by riverboat captain William Perry. The brick and timber structure has a total of 13 guest rooms and each is supposedly furnished in exquisite period furniture. It is currently owned and operated by the Jessie Allen Wise Garden Club who made the purchased in 1961. Volunteers spent thousands of hours restoring the hotel to its former place as a focal point for social functions. The ballroom and dining room each feature large French chandeliers and Oriental rugs. There are marble mantles, two lovely pianos, beautiful oil paintings and antiques.
