Move to Houston

by sexiiladii

Hey I will be going to Texas Southern in the fall and I wanted to know if someone can tell me what areas are safe and what apts. are close by the school?

Re: Move to Houston

by ridermirv

TSU is in the 3rd ward. It is NOT a safe area.

Houston is a very large city, so it has many good and bad areas. There's not much in the vicinity of downtown that is safe and would be affordable for a college student.

There are a couple of small apartment complexes along Wheeler and Southmore west of Scott (stay away from Southmore AT Scott though), as well as a couple of places along Blodgett that are mostly TSU students. There are also some rentals along Tierwester back more into the neighborhood. But this is generally a bad area and you're not going to be able to walk anywhere.
Another option is Cambridge Oaks down the street, but that may be open only to UH students. Same with Cullen Oaks.
When I was at UH though, I lived on the other side of 288 in the Museum District. That still required a drive though.

Thank yall so much I looked on apt finder.com and found a few that were resonable. What about the area by the Galleria my cousin lives in The Aberdeen but I dont wanna pay that much and plus their kinda old. I guess I'll have to get a ticket one weekend to see what its like.

Re: Move to Houston

by ridermirv

The area around the galleria is safe, but it might be expensive.

Re: Move to Houston

by Mari6625

if you think the The Aberdeen Apartments are expensive then you are going to have to move a little further out because those apartments are pretty cheap and nice. They are one of the more reasonably priced apartments. Good Luck!

Re: Move to Houston

Quite a few UH students live in the Galleria area for some reason. There's a string of cheaper apartment complexes just north of 59, south of Richmond and west of Fountainview. Not the best area, and the apartments aren't very nice either. It's actually pretty far from the campuses, so I never really understood it, unless they were living there to be close to the night club scene on Richmond. There's also a string of apartments along Richmond between Montrose and Weslayan that tend to get college students, but these are more expensive.
If you're willing to get that far away, you should look at more central like the Museum District or Montrose, especially if you want a safe neighborhood conducive to walking. Personally, I always found the best places in Houston were smaller complexes and even garage apartments. These are harder to find though, sometimes only by driving by and seeing the sign, as they don't tend to advertise the really good stuff. You can also check the web sites of local property management companies as they tend to deal exclusively with these sort of places.

You may want to reconsider TSU.

A mall with enterainment for all

by mafootje about Houston Galeria

This mall located in the center of houston was very special to us. Not only the beautifull glass attriums which give the sun a chance to fill the mall with natural light which in some malls have to be searched for.

It also has a large cinema, some nice restaurants and a skate rink.

We spend some hours here to windowshop and see a movie. It isn't one of the cheaper malls but if you look good you should find what you need for a reasonable price

Meat the Brazilian way !

by ben&jerry about Fogo de Chao

I love this place...
I love the concept:
A buffet with vegetables and others where you can help yourself as much as you want and different types of meat presented on spits (a waiter equals a spit and a spit equals one type of meat). You have 1 piece of cardboard, one side is red the other is green. If you want more meat you have to show the green side, if you are full put the red side on.
And as long as your cardboard is green , the different waiters come to tempt with delicious meat.
A place to go!

A Sack Lunch!!!

by monicarc about Brown Bag Deli

This is a great sandwich place, where you literally check your order off a brown bag!! The food is superb, plus its well priced!!! I think all their bread's are homemade! Tuna sandwiches and potato salad!!!

Houston's Memorial Park

by jjp76

Memorial Park is just about 5 miles west of Houston's downtown. It's the state's largest urban park, a forest oasis in a busy urban area.

This is a heavily wooded park situated along Buffalo Bayou. There are nice walking trails and this may be the only part of Houston that actually has some small hills and elevation changes. Nearby Bayou Bend park is a must see too.

The park is very popular with joggers and a good area to see some tall pines. There is also a golf course.

There is easy access to shopping and great restaurants in the neighboring Galleria area.

For some great views of the park's edges and downtown Houston, take the drive on Memorial Drive from loop 610 in the Galleria area all the way to downtown Houston. You'll be dropped off right in Houston's Theatre District.
