Staying in hotel adjacent to airport

by GraceH

I'll be in Houston for one day, staying at a hotel on FM 1960 in Humble, next to the airport. I want to go to Deerbrook Mall and a Target store nearby (do some quickie shopping before I have to catch my flight home). I know I can easily get a taxi at the hotel, but on the way back from the Mall or from the Mall to another place, how hard is it to catch a cab? Do I have to necessarily call a cab or are there taxi stands around?

Thanks!

You will have to call a cab. If you have time, you might want to go shopping at our Galleria instead.

Thanks!
I won't have time for the Galleria (so far from the airport!). I'll only be there for one afternoon and have to cram in all my shopping into a few hours! Thanks for the tip, though.

Travel Tips for Houston

A giant artificial water fall!

by XenoHumph

The Transco Fountain is a huge horseshoe-shaped water wall located near the Galleria shopping mall. It is well worth seing, to admire the hydraulic engineering it requires, to feel the rush of water and its spray and listening to the roaring noise!! You can also spy on the people having their wedding pictures taken by its side! It is a resfreshing sight and feel during the hot and humid days of summer.

The fountain was built in 1983-85, together with the Williams Tower, the tall single sky-scraper that characterizes the Galleria area.

The address is 2800 PostOak Boulevard (South of Westheimer Blvd). The fountain is located just South of the Galleria, in the Post Oak area, the Western side of Houston.

You need a Car

by peaceness98

Far from the Wild-Wild-West and Horse Back Riding- This is the highway capital of the world (well ok maybe I'm exaggerating here)- But you'll need a car defintley to get anywhere. You'll find plenty of Car rental spots scattered accross the city..the question is, how do you get to them? ;-)

Lots of Cab companies available, but you can get stranded someplace if you don't have a phone to call a Cab to pick you, and even then you'll be stranded until they arrive...normally takes long...that's of course if no one else steals the cab once it arrives(Happened twice to us!)

Great Tex-Mex, Pulchritudinous clientele

by Stargazer1 about Pappacito's Cantina

Really good Tex-Mex at a good price. Portions are huge. The place is always packed. My friend from Calgary met us at this one, and commented that "Pulchritude is inversely proportional to latitude!". Lots of pretty women abound. The fajitas are great. I love the ceviche -- huge bay scallops, shrimp, and fish. Good nachos as well. Good cheese and beef enchiladas (haven't tried the chicken). Oh, and excellent margaritas. We used to go to Happy Hour here often. Again, there's a view, too.

The Houston Museum of Art is a...

The Houston Museum of Art is a good way to kill a few hours and ther sculpture garden is fun they have art pieces you can 'interact' with for great pictures if the guards aren't looking. All of Houston art Museums are guarded closer than any other museums Ive ever been to. They also have excellent pop art ,a few Wharhols and Basquiats to highlight a few, at the museum on the University of Houston's campus.

Art Car Parade

by msbrandysue

Every May the Orange Show Center for Visual Arts puts on a heck of a car show...The Art Car Parde. Many families (dressed up and all) find a place on the Allen Parkway grassing sidewalks and bunker down for an hour to watch the most creativity in the city...in the form of decorated cars.

Warning: By May Houston can be very hot but it's only beginning. So, sitting in direct sunlight for an hour can cause you to become very hot and tired. Last year I found myself very dizzy and needed shade even before the parade was over.

You can bring coolers and pets. So, bring some water, or buy some at the few food stands and be careful! Wear sunscreen and a hat!

Parking: I was a bit confused as to where to park when I went. Allen Parkway is usually your exit but the traffic signs will usually tell you where to go off of I-45. So I actually ended up parking in a garage across from the Houston Public Library in downtown. To solve all of those issues just plan on showing up a bit early so that you are safe.

Oh, and something fun...you get to text your favorite pick at the end. And the results are posted in the paper the next day. Stick around after the parade for a fun time or head home and enjoy the rest of your weekend!
