Omni-presentTexas flag!
by XenoHumph
Americans are known to be very proud of their flag and put it everywhere, not only in front of official buildings but also in front of businesses or private dwellings. Well, the Texans, in addition, put the Texas flag too (the flag on the left on the pict, characterized by the "lone star")!! This is the only US state I know of which is so enamoured with their flag. Another example of Texan pride: they love to remind you that Texas was once independant (1835-1845)!
From time to time, but much more rarely, you might find the confederate flag (the one on the right in the pict). That's the flag of the Southern states during the american civil war (1861-1865). This one expresses more belonging to a Southern states spirit I suppose... The confedrate flag remains controversial, however, because for the african-american community it remains the symbol of slavery.
Cheap Shopping - Some Is Real, A lot Is Fake
by H-TownJourneyman about Harwin Dr. Shopping District
Harwin Dr. is a street in Southwest Houston, and is in the middle of large East and South Asian communities of the city. The shopping in this area is well known for it's dirt cheap prices, and for it's many stores that sell replicas and knock-off items of famous and popular brands. Pretty much anything you could ever possibly imagine is for sale here: clothing, shoes, jewelry, toys, electronics, furniture, even cars. When you enter any of the shops here, the employees quickly rush to you and will not let you be the entire time you are there, trying to sell you anything they can. But a famous saying goes for here more than any other place in Houston: "Buyer Beware". What you think might be a nice pair of Gucci shoes you just purchased may fall apart in a matter of weeks. But regardless of whether the items here or authentic or not, they are going to be pennies to what you would pay anywhere else. But proceed with caution! Anything and Everything Cheap, very cheap!
Good place for lunch near the museum district
by iblatt about Canopy
We spent a day in the museum district of Houston and were looking for a place for lunch. "Canopy" was recommended to us. We had a hummus dish ($8), which had a very delicate taste, and a baby spinach chicken salad ($11) which was also very good.
The restaurant was bright and airy, and the service was very friendly.
This a very good choice for breakfast, brunch or lunch!
Very nice Chinese in Clear Lake area
by XenoHumph about 888 Bistro
This is the best Chinese restaurant of the Clear Lake Area, a suburb Southeast of Houston. The tacky exterior hides a quite fancy restaurant inside. Excellent dishes, nice spices, and good service. Try the Chinese menu dishes for more original fare.
Avoid, however, to get take out from them. They are extremely slow to deliver (2 hours when they say one).
Houston has an impressive...
by tarush
Houston has an impressive 17-block Theater District, with a total of 12,000 seats. Only New York has more seats concentrated in one geographic area. It is also one of the few US cities with permanent ballet, opera, symphony orchestra and theater companies.
