Car rental with a twist

by english_jake

Hi. Myself and three friends are coming to texas for two weeks in March and are going to do a bit of driving around the state checking out during that time.

We therefore need to rent a car but wanted to rent something a bit different.

We were thinking something old with bench seats, maybe a convertible or maybe something big!

Does anyone know any rental companies that do out of the ordinary vehicles?

We fly in to Houston International.

Cheers!

I can only find Exotic and old small cars like a Karmen Ghia, sorry

A convertible would be pretty easy. Most places rent them, but they end up being so expensive, usually more than a large SUV. Not sure about renting weird vehicles in Texas. Maybe in Austin.
Where are you driving to in Texas?

We are driving from Houston to San Antonio then over to the Big bend and then back to Austin for the SXSW Music Festival (we know it's a long way!).

The only interesting things I could find were convertibles from the usual large car hire places...

Thanks for your help anyway.

Try rent-a-wreck. They have offices in Houston and Austin. You can get a really old car in good condition pretty cheap. they specialize in old and beat up cars that no one would ever steal.
the website is:

have fun!

Welcome to Texas!

You might try this site:

If you want something big, I believe you can rent Hummers from some rental agencies (like Hertz or Avis). I know you can rent Lincoln Navigators from Hertz.

Travel Tips for Houston

by Nomad_2001

Houston is a large and sprawling city. I do NOT recommend visiting Houston in July or August. It is generally TOO HOT and TOO HUMID! It was already pretty hot and humid in May, but nice overall.

What I like best about downtown Houston is some of the architecture. The Pennzoil Building is one of the great architectural wonders of Houston. If you are nice to the guard in the lobby, you just may be able to get a little tour, although the guy who showed me around has probably moved on to bigger and better things.

You should also visit the Galleria (west of Houston proper). This is a really neat mall with a year-round ice-skating rink inside the mall. There is nothing better than a photography date with the most beautiful woman in the world (sorry... the pictures are not for public viewing).

the best greek in houston

by bocmaxima about Niko Niko's Greek

Niko Niko's is, if not the best, than at least the most popular Greek restaurant in Houston.
I used to come here with friends at least once a month, sit on the patio outside and enjoy a gyro. In 2005, Niko Niko's underwent a huge expansion, and has now remodeled, significantly altered their facade, and added parking.
Very reasonably-priced.
Order style is order and pay then wait for your number.
Beer and wine available. Gyros are great, as is the falafel. Big portions.

Great BBQ and western atmosphere

by CLillard about The Swinging Door

This place has the real Texas BBQ that you're looking for and it's out in the country too.

This popular restaurant looks like something straight out of a western movie. The barn-like exterior and wooden floors add the perfect touch of rusticity. A live band plays out back on Friday and Saturdays. Put on your boots and get ready for some two-stepping. Bring your appetite and sample all the Texas barbecue you can handle. The brisket, chicken and ribs are superb, but save a little room for some blackberry or peach cobbler. It just might be the best this side of the Mississippi River.

Open Wed - Sun 11am-9 pm Good brisket!
