Downtown skyscrapers view

by Austinite_1

I am looking for a public place or a coffee shop from where I can have a nice downtown skyscrapers view at night. Any ideas?

RE: Downtown skyscrapers view

by monicarc

the two places I can think of are bars, of course, you don't have to buy a drink--one of the places, scott gertner's sky bar, on montrose near westheimer, usually has a cover charge. the other place is a bar called the red door. it doesn't have a cover charge, and you can just order a soft drink and go up to the second floor. the red door is located on Brazos street, in midtown.

Travel Tips for Houston

VISIT FRANK ZENI'S TEMPIETTO

by artemis-8

IN THE WEST END AMID THE BURGEONING BUILDING BOOM OF TOWN HOMES, YOU WILL FIND AN ARCHITECT'S HOME THAT DEFIES DESCRIPTION. IT IS A HOUSE BUILT OF CORRUGATED ALUMINUM, WITH GIANT POST MODERN COLUMNS.....FROGS STAND GUARD....THE TEMPIETTO (or "small temple") HAS BEEN CITED BY THE AIA, AND BEEN A STOP ON SEVERAL ARCHITECTURAL TOURS.

DONT MISS THE OPPORTUNITY CHANCE TO SEE THIS VISION OF WHAT A HOUSE CAN BE.

AS FRANK ZENI HIMSELF ONCE EXUBERANTLY ASSERTED, _IVE REINVENTED THE HOUSE!_

ONE CAVEAT PLEASE DONT DISTURB THE ARCHITECT'S PRIVACY...IT IS AFTER ALL, A PRIVATE HOME.

ADDRESS IS 5420 FLOYD ST, HOUSTON, TEXAS 77007

Richmond Arms

by fredaustin about Richmond Arms

This 'British'-style bar is right in the heart of the Richmond Strip, a clubbing district which waxes and wanes and changes every month. But the Richmond Arms always stays the same (my father went here for happy hour when I was a kid!). This bar is fairly low-key for the area, and serves fairly good food. Also a great lunch spot. Business casual or 'clubbing' attire.

Excellent Indian vegetarian (Kirby at 59)

by XenoHumph about Madras Pavilion

I am a meet lover but here, I fell in love with this restaurant's vegetarian dishes! They are simply delicious and delicately spiced. Originality comes also from their huge crepes, but they have a range of more traditional rice and curry type dishes and even "Indian pizzas". The cooking is also wheat-free and kosher. It is not a fancy restaurant and prices are low. Service with a smile, and lots of people from the local Indian community come here. They have wine (some from Israel) and beer, lassis and tea of course. The crepes were fun and delicious.

Museum of Fine Arts Houston (MFAH)

by XenoHumph

If you have time when you visit Houston, go see this nice art museum. No, it does not rival with Le Louvre, the British Museum, the Smithsonian and all these famous museums, but it has interesting pieces of art. What I like about that museum too is that it is generally quite empty of people, even for the best temporary exhibitions, making it a relaxing and pleasant experience.

Definitely check what they are having for temporary exhibitions (website below), they have really good ones, this time definitely rivaling any major art museum.

Permanent collections include:
African Art (2,500 Years of African Art; The Glassell Collection of African Gold)
American Painting and Sculpture (An American Perspective; Masterworks by Frederic Remington)
Antiquities (Art of the Ancient World)
Asian Art (A Window on Asia; The Glassell Collection of Indonesian Gold)
Bayou Bend Collection (A Unique Gathering of Americana)
Decorative Arts
European Painting and Sculpture
Impressionism / Post-Impressionism
Latin American Art
Modern and Contemporary Art ( Modern Masterpieces; The Art of Texas)
Native American Art
Oceanic Art
Photography
Pre-Columbian Art (Art of the Ancient Americas; The Glassell Collection of Pre-Columbian Gold)
Prints and Drawings
Rienzi Collection (European Decorative Arts)
Textiles and Costume

The museum is free on Thursday.
2 free Parkings on Main street at the corner of Oakdale and of Bissonet, just a block away from the museum. There is also a covered parking garage at the museum itself on Binz street but it costs $3.
