Pearland commute to Rice

by sazzabear

Hi

I was wondering what the commute time is from Pearland to Rice. While it is cheaper to live in Pearland, do you actually save after considering fuel costs?

Also, we are a family moving to Houston from Australia early August. Is it difficult to find a rental home in Houston?

Thanks.

RE: Pearland commute to Rice

by bocmaxima

With morning/afternoon traffic, it should take you 30 minutes to an hour to get from Rice to Pearland, at least the area near 288 or on west 518. Inside Pearland will, of course, take a bit longer. The biggest issue is actually getting onto the freeway as there's a lot of traffic around the Medical Center.
288 is obviously the best route, but Highway 35 serves as a good back road sometimes (Holcombe - OST - Griggs - Telephone Road).
You may also consider the Park & Ride though.
Rental homes are not hard to find, but are expensive inside the loop. If you're willing to live in the suburbs (like Pearland), you should have no issue finding a place.

Travel Tips for Houston

Minute Maid Park

by iwys

Minute Maid Park is a state-of-the-art ballpark, formerly known as Enron Field, which opened in 2000. It changed its name for obvious reasons - Enron went bust - and is now sponsored by the Minute Maid orange juice company. I come from England and we have no stadium for any sport in the same class as this. Its design is beautiful, the seating is spacious and comfortable and the variety of bars and restaurants inside the ballpark is incredble. Make sure you eat inside before or during the game as there is nowhere in the area to eat afterwards. There is a retractable glass roof so you never need to get too hot or cold. One unique feature of Minute Maid is the replica 19th century train which runs along 800ft of a track INSIDE the ballpark whenever a home run is scored.

I booked our tickets online at the Astros website (see link below) and picked them up at the box office on Texas Avenue. I needed to have the credit card I'd booked with and some form of ID - in my case, a passport.

I went to see the Astros play the Chicago Cubs (the Cubs won 7-2 and I think they'll go on to win the World Series this year). I guess the only disappointment for us was that the Astros' star player, Lance Berkman, struck out (see photos). We had $44 tickets, Second Level Club II. I think if I went again I would go for $39 Field Boxes in sections 105-111: they have the sun behind them and a closer view of the action.

2008 ASTROS INDIVIDUAL GAME TICKET PRICES
Location (sections) Individual Pricing
Dugout Boxes (112-126) $50
Field Boxes (105-111, 127-134) $39
Crawford Boxes (100-104) $34
Bullpen Boxes (150-156) $26
Second Level
Club I (211-229) $52
Club II (205-210, 230-236) $44
Mezzanine (250-258) $20
Third Level
Terrace Deck (305-338) $22
View Deck I (413-425) $15
View Deck II (409-411, 427-431) $12
Outfield Deck - adults (405-408, 432-438) $7
Outfield Deck - children (ages 3-14) $1

It's worth taking a pair of binoculars and a camera.

Latin Dancing

by Mari6625 about RICHMOND STRIP

Tropicana is my favorite Latin club in Houston, especially on Friday nights when the best Latin Bands play. And by Latin I mean the real deal. I am Venezuelan and if you want true Latin music this is the place to go. On the weekends they always have a live band. They play Salsa, Merengue, Bachata. Very classy place. In betwween they have a DJ who plays all of the above and Reggeaton. The crowd is a 30 something crowd. You will hardly find any 18 years old who will get on your nerves! You definately want to give this place a try if you are looking to dance the night away. Dress to impress!!

A Taste of Taiwan

by sahel578 about Big Ten Cafeteria

This is not for the picky eaters or people that enjoy Americanized Chinese food. Big Ten Cafeteria is like a flashback to Taiwan. Its tucked in the corner of Diho Plaza on Bellaire. They have just started serving stinky tofu.. (spicey fermented tofu) which is ADDICTIVE! Even if it does smell like dirty baby bottoms. Big Ten is a great place for authentic Chinese food, dirt cheap. About $3.50 gets you rice, entree, soup, vegitable and tea. Portions are big enough to take home for later.
THIS IS NOT A PLACE FOR WHINY, UNADVENTUROUS, PICKY EATERS...if you want a/c and mashed potatoes.. go to the millions of Papa's restaurants.. Stinky Tofu.. if you have had it in Asia.. you know why its so good.

Highest View of Houston

by CLillard

JPMorgan Chase Tower offers the highest public view of Houston from the Sky Lobby on the 60th floor. This floor serves as an observation floor as well as a transfer point to shuttle tenants to floors 49-59 and 61-75. The Sky Lobby is open to the public during the working hours of 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Monday-Friday. Entrance is free.

JPMorgan Chase Tower is the tallest composite building in the world. In addition to the ground floor lobby, there is another lobby sixty stories above the plaza level. This sky lobby acts as a transfer point for persons traveling to the upper floors. The view on this lobby is enhanced through the use of wide glass spans and thirteen-foot ceilings. A fascinating aspect of the Tower is its "fifth side", designed to be free of columns to enjoy an uninterrupted 20-mile vista of Houston.

JPMorgan Chase Tower has a total of 50 elevators. Six of those are express elevators to the Sky Lobby, which travel at a speed of 1,000 feet per minute, taking approx. 60 seconds from floor 1 to 60. The height of the Tower is just shy of three and one half-football fields, standing at 1,049 feet from ground level. The tower has 1.98 million square feet of gross building space.

Birding paradise

by XenoHumph

Houston is located in a prime area for avid birders. The region has all types of shore, marsh and forest birds all year long. The climate is subtropical and attracts many birds from the North in the winter. In the spring and fall, tons of migratory birds stop by for a few weeks.
