Safe Areas to live in Houston?

by jen2345

I am temporarily moving to Houston for a few months and will not be able to visit before I move. Could anyone tell me if the apartments I am considering are in safe/bad areas?
First one is medical center area, near the intersection of Almeda Rd and Old Spanish Trail. Second one is in the Buffalo Bayou Area, on Allen Parkway between Tirrel Street and Dunlay Street. Third place is on Timmons Lane and Richmond Ave.
Thank you, I appreciate it!

Of the 3 you mention, the only one in a decent area is Timmons Ln. The other 2 are questionable areas.

The area around Tirrell and Dunlavy, I would have to say is the best. I currently work close to there. The reason is that anything off of Allen Parkway is usually nice, usually. That particular area is right next to River Oaks, the nicest neighborhood in Houston; however, it is close to the Montrose area, which has pockets that are pretty questionable. I would choose this area, but it does depend on the particular place you are looking at. The Timmons area is also a good area, but there are even more pockets of questionable areas along Richomd. This area is good enough, though, since it is around Greenway Plaza. The final area I would not even consider, even though it may be the cheapest.

I recommend the Timmons area or else on over on Westheimer. Nice complex called Westcreek @ River Oaks right off Westheimer. Older complex but kept up very nice. Good area to live, work, shop, drink, whatever! Close to med center!

I would be comfortable with your second and third choices but would personally pass on the OST location.

Travel Tips for Houston

Driving on the beach!!

by XenoHumph

The way Texans go to the beach is with their precious cars!!! If you dream of pristine wild beaches to walk on, Texan ones are not for you!! So if you decide nevertheless like me to have a stroll along the ocean, watch these giant pickups and stay off the main tire marks on the sand...

Farmers Markets are coming to Houston!!!

by XenoHumph about Food / Drink

Watch out! Houston is getting progressive...Can you believe it??? There are actually farmer's markets in Houston!!! It started in 2003. It's about time, isn't when you think that California cities have had dozens of them for more than 10 years!! I only went to the one in the neighborhood of the Heights (Sat morning, 8-12). Great relaxed atmosphere, very un-houstonian, very pleasant.

But now, it looks like there are other Farmers Markets in Houston. More later when I know more. Here is the info I have so far:
- Houston Farmers Market Downtown Area
3701 Travis Street
Houston, TX
(713) 666-3991
Saturday 8-12 am
- Houston Farmers Market Rice Village Area
Parking lot of Christ the King Lutheran Church
2353 Rice (at Greenbriar), Houston, TX 77005
Tuesday 5-7 pm
- South-East of Houston/Clear Lake area
902 Hardesty, Seabrook, TX 77586
Saturday 12-4 pm Local farmers come sell their organic vegetables and fruits, nuts (great pecans!), preserves, home made soaps and all type of stuffs. Pay in cash

Zio's Italian Kitchen

by jackdewey about Zio's Italian Kitchen

This place had a very nice atmosphere. All waiters that I have been served by were extremely personable and made for a very enjoyable dinner. The menu had a good selection, the food was good and the price was quite affordable.

Sunset and sailboats in Clear Lake

by XenoHumph about Sundance Grill

***UPDATE***
Unfortunately, this restaurant got wiped-out by hurricane Ike in 2008. As of July 2010, it still has not re-opened. They have another location on the Kemah boardwalk, but I have never tried it.
***UPDATE***

This restaurant is wonderful from November to April when you can sit on their beautiful terrace and watch the boats come by and the sunset. The restaurant is located on the Southern shore of Clear Lake along the channel that the sailboats (and all sorts of pleasure boats) have to take to go back and from Clear Lake to Galveston Bay. The food is not extraordinary (typical American fare, fish, steaks, burgers), and definitely overpriced. But you pay for the view and the atmosphere. Also part of the show are the numerous birds, including some very friendly ducks who come next to your table to beg for food. We like to go to this restaurant when we have visitors or tourists from out of town. Definitely go there for diner to watch the sunset. Finally if you come by boat, they have docking facilities.
