Southern Crawfish Boil
Back in 2001, when we visited Houston, my uncle bought 50 pounds of crawfish and boiled them with sausage, potatoes, onions and spices. When they were finished, we stood around a heaping pile of food and just chowed down!

Hi, everyone,
It's my first time post here. I myself am going to Houston for about 10 days. Since i am new there, I want to do some sightseeing via joining local tour. Does anyone known there are any local tour company? Dose they have tour to Grand canyon national Park ? I really want to visit this natural miracle.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Houston has not much to offer. Sorry it is a business city with very few landmarks. And it is a CAR city. So try to get one. ( no subway )
Downtown is where most of the parks and sites are. In addition there is a trendy area called Montrose and West Univertsity.
The Galleria area is mostly shopping and entertainment ( west side ).
You have NASA about 40 minutes to the south. It is interesting to visit. And since you are on your way, you can hit Galveston beach.
If you "google" you'll find something ... for instance, I googled for "galveston tour houston" and found http://www.houstontours.com/
Rather than pre-book, you can always check with your hotel for any available tours.
Remember you're in Texas. This means big meals! Great BBQ (try Goode's Company). There's this place on Westheimer with great food ... think it's called Churrasco's.
The Grand Canyon is a *very* long way from Houston ... more around the Vegas side, but still a few hours from Vegas. You can try www.mapquest.com and get directions from Houston to Kingston (Arizona) and you'll see. Kingston is the closest city I remember, still a couple of hours from the Grand Canyon.
If you take a tour, make sure you have lunch in Keman overlooking the entry into Galveston.
*VERY HOT IN SUMMER* - so dress accordingly.

ooops ... that was Kemah, not keman
The Grand Canyon is 1400 miles away from Houston. It is an 18 hour drive, if you wish to rent a car. However, it would be a better idea for you to fly to Las Vegas, Nevada and arrange a tour from there.
Thank you all for all useful information about Houston and Grand canyon. I would take these suggestion into account, and fully prepare this trip to Houston. With friendly and kind people just like you and kind advices, I am sure that i will have a great time in Houston.
And i hope All the best for you and for me.

A branch of the original store in NYC. Not quite as extensive but still a treasure trove of all things candy. They have M & M's in more colors than you thought possible, dozens of Pez dispensers, bin after bin of gummie candies. They even have souvenier T-Shirts with the store logo and popular candy brands.
The funky interior, the Elvis icons, and the great swag [ tshirts, keychains, caps , etc ] PLUS the Thursday Special, Kick-ass margaritas and the secret Creamy Jalapeño Sauce have kept me coming back for over 10 years. I have never in all that time had a bad meal or bad experience. Its one of the few establishments I miss when not in my home town of Houston. The Thursday Special - little Taquitos smothered in Creamy Jalepeño. I can't describe - you must experience.
Also - the Taco Salad rocks. And if you're not quite that hungry - you can get the burritos "mini-sized" - that's an off menu deal you have to ask for.
Pappasito's is the Tex-Mex representative for the Pappas Restaurants chain. You can get some mighty delicious food here, but it can be quite pricey compared to other Mexican restaurants around town. They have great appetizers, the ceviche and shrimp quesadillas are great to start off things. If you are craving a Margarita with your meal, they have a variety of diiferent kinds to choose from. The menu is very extensive: they have some traditional Tex-Mex items such as enchiladas, tacos, and fajitas. And some not so standard items like quail, but prepared with a "south of the border" twist! Usually the best, and most tasty thing to get is a "platillo combinado", or a combination platter. Pappasito's pretty much has any combination of items you could want on the menu already, but if you don't see what you want, you can substitute to make it just what you are craving. They also have a great lunch menu, with prices that are a little more reasonable. As I stated though, this is a wonderful place to dine for Mexican food, and I recommend it highly. But in Houston, where there is a Tex-Mex restaurant practically on every corner, this is by far not the cheapest place in town! Beef & Chicken Fajitas al Carbon! Excellent flavor, and comes with a slew of sides like guacamole, sour cream, red beans, and pico de gallo.
The year 2000 marks the opening of Enron Firld, new home of the Houston Astros. With 42,000 seats, a roof that retracts in 20 minutes, and a natural grass playing surface, this beautiful new venue is the center of attention on the east side of downtwon, near the George R. Brown Convention Center. Houston's other famous home teams - the Rockets, the Comets, the ThunderBears, the HotShots and the Aeros - thrill their fans with heart stopping games. Excitem, ane has alread begun to build for Houston's new NFL team, who will kick off their first season in a new stadium in 2002. If racing is your game, check out thoroughbred and quarter-horse racing at Sam Houston Race Park in northwest Houston.
