does anybody have any personal experience living in Wheeler Ave section/LaBranch area. in particular the 1500 block of Wheeler in the newish condos?
I used to live about 6 blocks from there and spent quite a bit of time around that corner. A few years ago, the Wheeler/Fannin area was a pretty nasty neighborhood with lots of homeless people and drug activity. I'm not sure that the new condo stuff has forced a clean up, but the area just to the north is relatively nice. Also, if you get off Wheeler, it gets much nicer.
If you're concerned, drive around the area at night, and it should give you an idea of what to expect.
Many great golf courses in Houston at good rates. During the summer the best prices have you teeing off around 1 to 3pm which is of course the hottest time of the day. One of my favorites is Wildcat Golf Club. They have 36 holes of great golf and the course is always in incredible shape. Green fees run 30 to 50 dollars for 18 with a cart but is worth it. They rent clubs if needed.
Great fun downtown in the Spring. I remember going here back in the day to watch free live music.
Admission is free for the urban party, which begins at 5 p.m. and runs until 10. Persons under age 21 are not permitted unless accompanied by an adult. Jones Plaza, located at 615 Louisiana, is a public venue owned by the City of Houston.
Mi Luna is a fun tapas restaurant. For those who may not know, tapas are spanish appetizers, i.e. small portions of food, cold or warm, typical of what is served in bars in Spain. You can get various forms of calamari, fried goat cheese, eggplant with spices, lamb dishes,... This restaurant's tapas are excellent, the waiters are very nice, the service good, the atmosphere great. Accompany that with a glass of nice spanish wine.
Some evenings feature a flamenco entertainment after 8 pm.
Visit NASA space center, I had a wonderful time there. A lot in store if you are a space enthusiasts. Got a ride on their space-age vehicles which kinda "float" on the ground. And also visit the control room where everything happens...
The Moody Gardens located in Galveston is a great place for the entire family..
