Thanksgiving in Houston

by marie415

Hi there;
I am looking for a restaurant in Houston or around Bush Airport that would be open on Thanksgiving Day (I have a 6 pm flight to NY). I'm not American, so I have no particular regrest over not having Thanksgiving Dinner with my family, but I would be interested in having my meal at a restaurant that serves something Thanksgiving-related. Is that at all possible? Will Houston be completely dead that day? are there ethnic restaurants (not far from downtown Houston -- i'm not familiar with the city) that would be open?
Thanks for thoughts/suggestions!

I just saw yesterday that Pappas Bar-B-Q will be open for thanksgiving. They will have all the usual thanksgiving food. While there are several pappas restaurants in Houston, this one in particular is along the north freeway, not too far from Bush, like 20 or so minutes (in Houston, 20 minutes is not far at all).

Travel Tips for Houston

15 feet taller than the Washington Monument

by heitzenrater

The San Jacinto Monument is dedicated to the "Heroes of the Battle of San Jacinto and all others who contributed to the independence of Texas." The monument is a 570-foot shaft topped by a 34-foot star symbolizing the Lone Star Republic. The building incorporates a number of innovative engineering features not common during the period of its construction. The American Society of Civil Engineers recognized this technology with the prestigious designation of State and National Historic Structure. The monument is listed as the tallest stone column memorial structure in the world, 15 feet taller than the Washington Monument in Washington, DC.

Visitors can ride up the elevator to the massive concrete and limestone tower to the observation floor at 489 feet above the Battleground. On a clear day, the view encompasses the historic battleground, the marsh restoration and boardwalk, the Buffalo Bayou, the busy Houston Ship Channel, the Battleship TEXAS, and many square miles of surrounding area

All facilities are open 7 days a week 8:00 am - 6:00 pm

All facilities are closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day

From Interstate 610 East, take Texas Highway 225 east for 11 miles to Battleground Road (Texas Highway 134), continue north approximately 2 miles. Turn right on Park Road 1836 for the Monument or continue on Highway 134 another mile to reach the Battleship. Entrance on your left.

Metro bus to/from airports

by TXgal

Hotels don't have a shuttle that does but downtown is in between both airports and Super Shuttle can take them from IAH to downtown and then to Hobby for a fee that is less than taxis. If you want the less expensive transportation the METRO bus (#102) runs from IAH to downtown and (#88) runs from downtown to Hobby airport. See www.ridemetro.org for the schedules

Landmark Italian Restaurant

by monicarc about The Spaghetti Warehouse

I think there might be chains of this restaurant now, but its an old, landmark, italian restaurant in Houston. It is supposedly haunted--I think in the upstairs area. Its a good family restaurant. The Spaghetti! the wedding soup is good too. So is the garlic butter that comes with the bread.

Houston Zoo

by H-TownJourneyman

The Houston Zoo, located within Hermann Park, has been in operation since 1922. It is without a doubt one of the most popular places to visit in the entire city, and it's central location near other attractions such as Hermann Park itself and the Museum District makes it easily accessible. It features exotic animals from all over the world, such as lions, hippopotami, penguins, and a variety of primates. There are several refreshment stands around the grounds in case you need a snack or a cool drink on a hot Houston summer's day. And the gift shop has a slew of souvenirs for you to purchase to remember your trip here. The zoo was free to enter up until 1988, but the fees now are still very reasonable for all that you can experience while here.It open everyday of the year except Christmas Day.

Amid downtown’s towering...

by tarush

Amid downtown’s towering symbols of Houston’s future are the perfectly preserved remnants of its past — the historic homes of Sam Houston Park and the Heritage Society Museum. Admission to the museum, at 1100 Bagby, is free; guided tours of the homes are $6 for adults, with discounts for children and seniors. For details, call (713) 655-1912.
