Where to stay

by GUYON

We will be in Houston between 30 October and 1st November 2004.
Where can we search an accomodation ? The area must match the following requests :
- near some major attractions of Houston
- safe
- not desert during the Week end
- hotels with private parking
- not too expensive.
Thanks
RAY

There are some hotels downtown and along the lightrail line that you might like. The Hilton Americana (I think that I am spelling that wrong) and the Marriott may have good rates for you. The hotels that are near the airports are kind of far way from everything. Also the hotels in the Galleria area could fit your requests. If you have any questions about a patrticular hotel, please feel free to email me and I'll be pleased to let you know more about the area.

Probably the Galleria area is your best bet. Downtown is mainly offices with a small section of bars and nightlife. The Galleria has a decent nightlife, shops and of course, stores. There are some hotels on the southern part of the 610 loop that also might be okay. It might be a bit quiet at night, but there are several restaurants nearby. It’d be about a 10 minute drive to the Galleria and about 15 to downtown. It is near the Six Flags amusement park, but that might be closed by October 30.

I would also recommend the Galleria area. (It's near 59 and 610 intersection)

I have never been to a hotel in Houston itself. However, I would try to find one near Rice University and Rice village (nice restaurant and shop area W of Rice campus) or the Montrose blvd (lots of restaurants, more boheme, also gay district). Here is a webpage I found with list of hotels and how far they are from Rice U:
http://explore.rice.edu/explore/Hotel.asp

The Galleria area is the expensive part of Houston. It is not an area where people really walk around. You drive there, park your car and go shop or to a restaurant. The area the closest to a real city feeling (walking in streets and activity at night!) would be Rice village, Montrose blvd and Main street (the part downtown that they block off evening during week-ends). All these areas are safe.

Courtyard by Marriott or Residence Inn in downtown Houston. What is your price range?

Thanks for your answer but I have already reserved at Residence Inn.

Travel Tips for Houston

Rookery - Smith Oaks - High Island

by ellsasha

Smith Oaks rookery is an island in the middle of Claybottom Pond and the place where waterbirds roost and nest. Travel east from Houston on I-10, take the Winnie exit and travel approximately 20 miles south on Hwy 124. Visitors to the sanctuary are able to get a close look at these birds from the shore line trails and viewing platforms. The best time to view is the last hour before dark when the birds are coming in for the night from their marshland feeding grounds, the display is nothing short of specatular. Nesting usually starts in March and birds can be seen gathering sticks for their nests, turning their eggs, and then chick feeding and flight training. Alligators are in the surrounding waters. Getting around you'll have to...

by Angela0667

Getting around you'll have to rent a car. Our bus system here isn't what it should be for a major city. However, you can take city bus from the airport to downtown Houston. Recently the city added inner-city 'trolleys' that will get you from one end of town to the other.

Avoid this like the plague!

by SinKitty about Cafe Express

Ugh! Cafe Express is just overpriced, wanna-be-fancy fast food. Houston has SO many great restaurants, why would you waste your time going to a McDonalds? WHY?! Well, that's what you'd be doing to yourself if you eat here. You'll be disappointed.

Shopping with the people of the world.

by NomadicLife

Galleria--The biggest mall in Houston. You could walk around this mall and hear 10 different languages being spoken in 10 minutes. Great shopping selection, although the prices can be a bit higher than if you go to the other malls in the city. There is an ice skating rink in the middle of the complex.

NASA Center

by el_ruso

NASA is located a fair distance SE from downtown between Clear Lake, Dickinson and Pasadena. You can visit of course and learn about the space program, touch the moon rock and see the control center room - a lot smaller than how it appears on TV. It is an interesting site, but be aware that it is geared predominantly to young children.
