Moved to Houston. Info on Katy, Cypress wanted!

by d5354p

Hello, I recently moved here to Houston. I was wondering what impressions the locals have on the Katy (Cinco Ranch) area and the Cypress Area.
I saw some homes online in Cypress that I love however I wanted to know how it is like over there. Which of these two area's are better than the other? I get rave reviews about the schools in tha Katy are. We have 2 young boys 7 and 4 year old. We are told The Woodlands was nice however the drive into my husband's job would not be good. Please flood me with information. Thank you in advance.

Katy ISD has a better rep than Cy-Fair ISD (the district serving the majority of the Cypress area). Cy-Fair is an enormous school district though, so it really depends on where you are. Further up 290 toward Cypress is Cy Falls High School, I believe, which is a fairly new school (late 90's) in the Fairfield area so it's mostly suburban kids.
The two areas are pretty close to one another, separated by a few two-lane farm roads. Currently, the traffic on I-10 is much worse than 290, but that will probably change in a few years when the construction on the Katy Freeway is complete. But the Katy/Cinco Ranch/Kelliwood areas have experienced much more growth than the 290 corridor, which is a bit of a double-edged sword.
The Woodlands is one the better communities in the area. I lived there from about age 11-14 and my dad still lives there (moved back after being overseas). It's a nice area, but it's dull. Since your kids are so young, they will probably appreciate it though.

Travel Tips for Houston

Driving in Houston is almost a must

by jjp76

Unfortunately, Houston has no real public transporation system.

The light rail, which will be completed in early 2004, will only serve those from downtown to Reliant Park. Although this includes the Museum District and the Medical Center, it does not include the Galleria area, NASA, and other outlying areas.

Though there is a bus system, you really need a car and a good map to get around in Houston.

The best situation is know someone in Houston who will drive you to the places of interest.

Mall Shopping on the Northwest Side

by H-TownJourneyman about Willowbrook Mall

Located Northwest of Houston on FM 1960, Willowbrook Mall is a popular shopping destination for people on this side of town. Growing up just down the street, I have frequented this mall since i was a young boy. Like most megamalls of Houston, it has the big department stores such as Dillards, Sears, and JC Penney. Many apparel shops are here like Eddie Bauer, Banana Republic, and Old Navy. There are shoe stores such as Foot Locker and Payless, and jewelry stores like Helzberg and Kay. And of course, no mall would be complete without a food court! Chick Fil-A has a location here, as do Taco Bell and Wendy's, along with a few specialty eateries like Cajun&Grill and Sarku Japanese. The mall has recently been renovated, and it has a much more modern look to it than previously. Generally megamalls like Willowbrook will have higher prices than individual stores located elsewhere, but with it's location out of the center of town, for the most part it's more reasonable then malls in town like the Galleria.

You can't come to Texas and...

You can't come to Texas and not have some B-B-Q!!! the best place to get it in Houston is Brown Sugar's B-B-Q. It's VERY affordable delicious.
It's a down home country enviroment. From the old fashion camping plates to the checkered tableclothes. The Super Spud! This baked potato comes with sour cream, chives, butter, cheese, and a pile of chopped beef or turkey. They say everything is bigger in Texas, and in the case of The Super Spud it's true!

Authentic Mexican in the Clear Lake area

by XenoHumph about Mely's

Real mexican food in the Clear Lake area (SW Houston, where NASA-Johnson Space center is located)!! A restaurant that finally dares to have spicy food if you want to! Delicious, large choice on the menu, great margaritas (not watered down for once...). The best mexican restaurant I have found so far in Houston. And cheap at that!

If you're an artsy type of person, like me, then you'll appreciate visiting the Museum of Fine Arts.
They have unique art from all over the world displayed there and many times they have special events going on year round.
