Houston
by Kodi01
This sprawling city hums with the energy and independent spirit that turned it from swampland into the fourth-largest city in the U.S. Everything is big, from the towering skyscrapers, to the huge sports Astrodome that links with two Six Flags theme parks to create one gargantuan entertainment complex, to the city's prominence in aerospace, oil, shipping and finance. Even the architecture makes big, bold statements, like the medical center towers that resemble two giant syringes. A thriving business center, the city has become increasingly cosmopolitan, with an influx of diverse ethnic groups and a strong emphasis on the arts. Opera, ballet, symphony and theater are all top-notch, and museums abound. The midday heat is easily escaped inside the numerous attractions and shopping areas, particularly in the pedestrian-friendly 6.5-mile underground city. Since you're in the place that broadcast man's first step on the moon, you may want to pay a visit to Space Center Houston, where you'll be whisked into outer space through simulations and films. Once back on earth, you can hop on the tram to the complex's NASA/Johnson Space Center to watch astronauts and engineers at work and in training
Gourmet Food (2)
by XenoHumph about Whole Foods Market
Whole Foods is similar to Central Market, except smaller in store size and selection range.
I generally go to the store on Bellaire Avenue which is not too crowdy (Northwest corner of Bellaire and Westlayan). Ethnic food, bulk spices and all type of rice, grain, nuts..., organic products, cheeses, wines and beers from all over the world, vegetables and fruits, flowers, meat and fish,... Expensive, maybe slightly less than Central Market, however. Go there only for what you do not find in ordinary supermarkets.
My favorite Tex-Mex restaurant
by CLillard about Chuys
This place has a happy hour type of atmosphere and it's very relaxed. On the weekends you may have to wait an hour for a table. They also have outside seating.
Open: Sun-Thurs 11am-11pm, Fri-Sat 11am-12am
Happy Hour: Mon-Fri 4pm-7pm
Featuring: Fully Loaded Nacho Car, $3 House Margaritas, $6 House Texas Martinis & $2.25 Domestic Beers Chips & Salsa. They serve 2 different types of salsa and you can also request the creamy jalepeno dip too (free). My friends and I always get fajitas there. You can get the fajitas for One for $9.99 and it can feed 2 people. I also like the Chicken Tortilla Soup, for $3.50 you can get a huge bowl that would be your entire meal, or you can just get a cup as a side item. Another favorite of mine is the burrito, with your choice of sauce. They also have good frozen maragaritas!
good food, great atmosphere
by John_P_LSU about Doneraki Restaurant and Cantina
Self-billed as the most authentic Mexican Restaurant and Cantina.... The food is ok, an interesting flavor to some dishes. The atmosphere is nice, albeit a bit modern and spacious in the Gulfgate Location. Enchiladas were great, but the tamales had way, way too much cornmeal and not enough meat. I am not exaggerating to say the thickness of the "roll" of cornmeal was 1/4" to 3/8"!!
Hermann Park
by MarvintheMartian
Great place for a day out - it's Houston's oldest park and June, 2004 marked the 90th birthday of George Hermann’s gift of park land to the City of Houston. The restoration of Sam Houston Monument Circle will mark the completion of nearly $30 million in capital improvement projects in Hermann Park managed by the Friends of Hermann Park in partnership with the City of Houston.
For more information about Hermann Park and all the attractions in the area look at the website below - it's a great resource!
