Nice neighborhood close to Dairy Ashford and Westheimer streets.

by pinoy_jpn

Anyone who can suggest some good neighborhood near Dairy Ashford and Westheimer streets? I will be working on this location (zip code 7707) and I want to be close to train/bus stations for commuting. I have two grade school kids thus I want something that is close to hospitals, schools, parks, etc. Any suggestion appreciated. Thanks a lot!

No trains out there and I wouldn't recommend buses either... Just a shooting on a bus Westheimer/Kirkwood two weeks ago. Most people drive here. If you live on the South side of Westheimer, schools in Alief ISD are not great. There are some nice neighborhoods like Royal Oaks or Shadow Lake subdivisions. Nice apartments and home subdivisions not too far from Dairy Ashford/Westheimer is over at Briar Forest/Eldridge.

Thank you very much for your reply. I am saddened and wondering about the safety of living there in Houston.
Now can you suggest a good neighborhood not too far to commute to Dairy Ashford by train or bus? I know car is really a necessity there but we opt to commute for the meantime. All I want is to find a neighborhood where my family members can walk or commute to school, go to doctor, supermarket, etc, without using a car. We ought to having a car after we established ourselves. I want some input of neighborhood here so I can research them in the net.
How about Westchase area? Is there a safe neighborhood in there and not too far to commute to Dairy Ashford?

By the way, what are the requirements in driving there in Texas? I have my local license here but I guess I need to get an international drivers license, am I right?

Thanks again and more power.

Please don't worry. I didn't mean to scare or worry you. That incident on the bus doesn't happen everyday, and I was surprised it happened in front one of the nicest subdivision Royal Oaks. My parents-in-law were here visiting us for 3 weeks for first time from Paris and they insisted on taking the bus too on the days we worked; they didn't have any problems. You can look at some houses at www.har.com; from their you can search by zip codes or subdivisions. I'd recommend looking for something North side of Westheimer where schools are better. I myself live over in 77077 zip at subdivision called Lakeside Enclave; we just moved there 4 months ago from The Woodlands. There are parks nearby that you can certainly walk to; Terry Hershey Park is one of them. On the HAR site, some listings will show the name of the schools and you can reference the schools from this site: http://www.greatschools.net/modperl/browse_school/tx/3331 after typing in the name and search. In the zip code 77077, everything is a short drive away. Less than 20 minutes you can reach downtown, less than 10 minutes a hospital, shopping malls, several parks so you don't have to worry. Hope that helps a bit and will put you at ease moving here.

Travel Tips for Houston

Houston

by Kodi01

This sprawling city hums with the energy and independent spirit that turned it from swampland into the fourth-largest city in the U.S. Everything is big, from the towering skyscrapers, to the huge sports Astrodome that links with two Six Flags theme parks to create one gargantuan entertainment complex, to the city's prominence in aerospace, oil, shipping and finance. Even the architecture makes big, bold statements, like the medical center towers that resemble two giant syringes. A thriving business center, the city has become increasingly cosmopolitan, with an influx of diverse ethnic groups and a strong emphasis on the arts. Opera, ballet, symphony and theater are all top-notch, and museums abound. The midday heat is easily escaped inside the numerous attractions and shopping areas, particularly in the pedestrian-friendly 6.5-mile underground city. Since you're in the place that broadcast man's first step on the moon, you may want to pay a visit to Space Center Houston, where you'll be whisked into outer space through simulations and films. Once back on earth, you can hop on the tram to the complex's NASA/Johnson Space Center to watch astronauts and engineers at work and in training

Gourmet Food (2)

by XenoHumph about Whole Foods Market

Whole Foods is similar to Central Market, except smaller in store size and selection range.

I generally go to the store on Bellaire Avenue which is not too crowdy (Northwest corner of Bellaire and Westlayan). Ethnic food, bulk spices and all type of rice, grain, nuts..., organic products, cheeses, wines and beers from all over the world, vegetables and fruits, flowers, meat and fish,... Expensive, maybe slightly less than Central Market, however. Go there only for what you do not find in ordinary supermarkets.

My favorite Tex-Mex restaurant

by CLillard about Chuys

This place has a happy hour type of atmosphere and it's very relaxed. On the weekends you may have to wait an hour for a table. They also have outside seating.

Open: Sun-Thurs 11am-11pm, Fri-Sat 11am-12am
Happy Hour: Mon-Fri 4pm-7pm
Featuring: Fully Loaded Nacho Car, $3 House Margaritas, $6 House Texas Martinis & $2.25 Domestic Beers Chips & Salsa. They serve 2 different types of salsa and you can also request the creamy jalepeno dip too (free). My friends and I always get fajitas there. You can get the fajitas for One for $9.99 and it can feed 2 people. I also like the Chicken Tortilla Soup, for $3.50 you can get a huge bowl that would be your entire meal, or you can just get a cup as a side item. Another favorite of mine is the burrito, with your choice of sauce. They also have good frozen maragaritas!

good food, great atmosphere

by John_P_LSU about Doneraki Restaurant and Cantina

Self-billed as the most authentic Mexican Restaurant and Cantina.... The food is ok, an interesting flavor to some dishes. The atmosphere is nice, albeit a bit modern and spacious in the Gulfgate Location. Enchiladas were great, but the tamales had way, way too much cornmeal and not enough meat. I am not exaggerating to say the thickness of the "roll" of cornmeal was 1/4" to 3/8"!!

Hermann Park

by MarvintheMartian

Great place for a day out - it's Houston's oldest park and June, 2004 marked the 90th birthday of George Hermann’s gift of park land to the City of Houston. The restoration of Sam Houston Monument Circle will mark the completion of nearly $30 million in capital improvement projects in Hermann Park managed by the Friends of Hermann Park in partnership with the City of Houston.

For more information about Hermann Park and all the attractions in the area look at the website below - it's a great resource!
