Houston is very diverse and international
by jjp76
Houston is perhaps the most diverse city in the state, if not this entire area of the country -- people come here from everywhere. I think it is often forgotten by others that Houston is a large, international port city much like Los Angeles, Miami, New York, and Seattle. Over 90 languages are spoken here. I think you could find almost any kind of culture in Houston.
The city also celebrates its diversity, with numerous ethnic festivals and an annual International Festival that takes place in downtown.
And most importantly, people here LIKE each other and are respectful of each other for the most part. When was the last time you heard of race riots in Houston, or any kind of riots or uprisings for that matter? Outsiders might stereotype Texans as rednecks, but I've actually found Houstonians to be quite civilized compared to many people in other areas of the country.
Keep in mind that while in Houston, you are likely to run into many different cultures.
Upscale Around the Galleria
by msbrandysue about The Galleria
So AROUND the Galleria are a bunch of wonderful shops as well. Here you'll find Ethan Allan and other very nice stores that are not directly connected to the Galleria. It can be a VERY crowded area though, especially during the holidays so beware. Traffic is a b*****!!! My favorite store is here: LAKESHORE!!!! (It's a teaching store) :p Expect to pay more than you would at a normal mall.
Eat where locals eat
by Dr._Aldakov about Brasil
Hardly remarkable place from outside is really a very cute one inside. They specialize mostly on evening mealas and mostly drinks but surprizingly enough they have breakfasts as well. It's very cosy inside, they have an outdoor patio where you can enjoy your morning scrabled eggs with fresh-squeezed orange juice for a very affordable price. Add there nice evening live music and decent coffee and you'll get "Brasil". By the way - don't expect brasilian cuisine :)
Texas "I" talian Food
by H-TownJourneyman about Carrabba's Italian Grill
The Carrabba's family immigrated to the United States from Sicily in the late 19th century, and settled here in southeast Texas. Years later, the family would begin to share some of the cuisine that their homeland is so noted for. The Carrabba's chain of restaurants has it's roots in the Houston area, although now it has locations all over the United States. The owners Johnny Carrabba and his uncle Damian Mandola have installed the slogan "not your average Italian" to thier restaurant. And on many occasions this is the case. But the big problem I have personally experienced at these establishments is a lack of consistency. On a good night, you can taste some of the best Sicilian food anywhere around. A great selection of appetizers such as calamari and bruschette bread, excellent salads and a wide variety of fresh pizzas such as the Margherita. The pastas and entrees like the eggplant parmesan can be stellar. And a decent wine list can bring out the flavor of the food. But several times I have dined here. the food can be way below par. Sometimes the seasonings and/or spices seem to be totally different than before, giving the food a completely different taste. And the staff, while generally very friendly, tend to let service lag when it gets busy. So with Carrabba's, it can be a sort of a roll of the dice. Sad, because as stated, when they are on, they offer a great dining experience. Chicken Bryan - Grilled chicken breast w/ goat cheese, sundried tomatoes and basil sauce
NASA Johnson Space Center
by jjp76
The first word spoken from the moon was "Houston..." What would a trip to "Space City" be without a tour of NASA's Johnson Space Center and Mission Control?
This is the headquarters of the country's manned space flight program and the US branch of the International Space Station, and also where all the country's astronauts are trained. The nation's hub of manned space flight and everything that goes into it is right here.
NASA's JSC is on the outskirts of Houston in the southeast metro area of Clear Lake.
