Packing List
by fredaustin
Pick your luggage based on the type of accommodations you'll be in. The less you're paying, the less help you'll have with your bags. And you'll want help: it's hot! Extra underclothes, socks, T-shirts (twice as many as you think you need is a good start!). Houston is nature's sauna: hot as Arizona, humid as Seattle. Pack as though you'll be in a rainforest. Houston is not techniically classified as a rainforest because it gets TOO MUCH rain, and it is too hot in the summer and too cold (barely) in the winter. Sunblock (all year), deodorant(!), bug repelant/cortisone cream, talcum/after-shower powder/foot powder, band-aids (I get twices as many blisters when I'm sweating profusely.) Leave the hairspray behind, buy products meant for humidity. Ladies, keep the make-up light or it will slide off your face: NOT pretty! Bring whatever you use for sunburn relief (even in December). Bring film for high light levels, in Houston the sun is bright even when it's pouring down rain! Don't go barefoot in Texas--the ground will burn the bottoms of your feet, especially at the beach! Extra changes of underclothes are a must for staying comfortable outdoors. Wear cotton or a fabric that wicks! And you won't feel thirsty because of the humidity--you must remember to pack plenty of water and drink ALL of it! Sunglasses.

There are a lot of places to go downtown. It is expensive. The club 'Prague' is probably the best club, but it is a little overated. They try to be a New York club and charge a similar amount, but it is far from it.
Toc is ghetto, the Mercury is very expensive and full of gold diggers. Sabo is fairly nice. If you like different beers, try Flying Saucer or Slainte's. If you go downtown, dress to impress.
Cheesecake Factory
by peaceness98 about Cheesecake Factory
There's a 2 level cheesecake factory in the Galleria Mall
Better book a seat in advance
They have plenty of main dishes, but I found it's safest to just order a cheesecake.
Appetizers are big enough to fill you up, i find their cheesecakes overpriced for the size and quality. You'll find it's not worth the long wait to be seated. Oreo's Cheesecake
Praliens & Cream Cheesecake
Triple Choco Cheesecake
Strawberry Cheesecake

Mission control is worth a look however this is the most unorganised place ever. You have to wait for 2 separate coach tours to see everything and you can be stuck waiting for ages. the two tours could very easilybe combined into one especially when they both end in the rocket garden. if you have a choose between only visiting here or kennedy, kennedy wins hands up! The whole centre is sponsered byvariuos different companies
Oil Refineries
by keeweechic
One of the densest concentrations of refineries are found in the Houston area. The oil companies are located along the Houston Ship Channel where it is more sheltered from bad weather that comes up from the Gulf. The construction of the refineries began during World War 1 and were expanded during World War II.
Another large refinery is south of the city at Texas City.
